I want nothing more to do with those guys. We used to seine creeks around college station for bait and had more than a few run ins. They are mean, nasty and tell you about it.
Nice catch!

Re: Interesting visitor while catfishing - 03/20/16 03:42 PM
Awesome picture! I saw one that had a shell close to 4' from front to back and told my dad that I would like to catch one and see it up close. Luckily the one that we caught was not as big as the one that we saw. That looks like about a 60+ lb turtle. Great trophy picture. Did you retrieve your hook?

Got one of those a few years ago on twok, he was just swimming on the surface and I said we have to catch this thing or no one will believe us lol so had to pull the boat up and grab him by the tail and wrastle him in the boat, needless to say he was pi$$ed!! Grats on the catch!!! Those things are ancient!!
Caught him on a noodle and had to let him have the hook. He was a good 40-50 lbs without a doubt. He hissed like a snake the whole time I messed with him.

I'm glad you posted this. I was going to ask Layne's permission to show off that turtle. That's the biggest one that I have ever seen out of the water.

Re: Interesting visitor while catfishing - 04/01/16 08:13 PM
I snagged one of those things back in the early 80's while fishing for cats on the Mississippi river up in Minnesota. I was fishing with a zebco 808 reel and rod combo with 20lb line. I thought I was snagged on a log until my line began moving upstream. That sucker was huge, at least 50 or 60lbs if not bigger? He had a thick mat of moss growing on his back. That old man was not happy and that's putting mildly. I cut the line after I got him into shallow enough water to take a good look at him. It was a thrill, but scary!
I've heard stories about people killing them for food and finding Indian flintstone arrowheads and civil war musket balls lodged inside them.
a couple of years ago some Mississippi hunters shot and killed a 910 pound alligator. Nine of the wounds on the animal are believed to have been caused by Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket,suggesting that the reptile could have possibly been used as a target for shooting practice by Confederate troops. The huge animal also bore five other bullet wounds from three different calibers of hunting rifles. This unique specimen was estimated to have been 185 years old at the time of its death. The heaviest ever recorded, weighed in at a staggering 1,011.5 lbs, was pulled out of a river in Alabama in August of last year.

I seen a snapper a couple years ago in a ditch walking upw to the road. Figuring he would be road kill soon I turned the truck around and relocated him to a creek not far away. Guessing it was 20-25lbs. Man,got to respect them for their age and nasty mouth. Seen him once in that creek after that. Makes you happy knowing you may have saved something special and rare. I'm far from a tree hugger but respect nature always.

Those alligator turtles are dangerous. It wouldn't take much to lose a finger or two. Those are the biggest ones I've ever seen. I steer clear of them when i can. It's been a while since I've seen one. thanks for all the pics.

Caught this bad boy in the Trinity in Arlington a few years ago. It was a monster.
That is a size 12 boot in the second pic for reference. We never got it all the way out of the water.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing the pics, fellas
No turtles were harmed in the making of that photo. I, on the other hand, almost sustained a hand amputation. He was not happy with me.
