Chum

I don't know much about catfishing. If I catch one, it's an accident. Do most of you guys that fish in lakes use chum to pull the fish in? If so, what kind of chum do you use? Will appreciate any and all answers.

My favorite is range cubes. They don't stink like holy hades and there is no preparation other than going to buy them. I have soured wheat and milo also but if you pick a good spot they all work well. If you have the time to sour grain it might be slightly less expensive???

20% range cubes most of the time. Soured milo when it is cold

I like wheat most then milo I never and any luck with rang cubes or cotton seed cake.

Thamks Human Seine, Littlewheel, and Chemdawg for the replies. Another thing is that there are so many kinds of baits used for cats that it can get confusing for someone like me. Was wondering if cut bait from sunfish would be any good?

I've been catching them on live minnows and shad lately.

The cut bait will be fine. I also like Stubbys and chemdogs bait. I prefer the cut bait now as I focus on blue cats. I don't fish with chum when chasing blues.

Can you get range cubes at most feed stores?

Has anyone tried souring some left over homebrewing grains (barley, wheat, rye, etc.) to use as chum?

To F.T.I.D, if you want to make the trip out to Lake Somerville and have a boat or kayak, I can put you on some catfish.

I've used soured wheat. I bet the leftovers from brewing would be ideal since the preferred recipe for souring the grain requires beer and sugar. Just don't seal that bucket or you'll have the worlds' largest stinkbomb.

W.C. Briley out of San Angelo made the stinkinest stuff I ever smelled for chum. Ol Briley was a catfish guide up on Ray Roberts several years ago. Whatever this stuff was, it was black and it worked. Myself, my brother and my dad were in the boat with Briley when he caught his 10,000th channel cat. Never fished with Briley that we didn't limit out. Briley made his own punch bait, also. The best I have ever used and you sure didn't want to get any of it on you because the smell didn't wash off. It would wear off after a few days. Sure wish I had me a 5 qallon bucket of that stuff.
