New PB last night (7/10)

New PB last night (7/10) - 07/11/14 11:27 PM

Went to a local lake yesterday looking for some eaters, but as always I put out my "Shamu" pole just for fun. After about 3 and a half hours of no action my buddy and I started chatting and not paying attention to the poles. All of a sudden he yells "Olen, your shamu pole, your shamu pole!" I turn around and my rod was doubled over and my rod holder was leaning towards the water. I ran over to the rod and held on. The fish wasn't peeling drag that much, but it was the first time any drag was pulled on one of my 6500 C3's. Was a short fight, but when I got him in I was surprised at how big he was. I'm guessing 40 ish pounds. Personal best flathead as well as fish in general.
I don't know how to post pics it would be happy to send a couple via email or text if anyone wants to help me out.

Lol. My "shamu" pole is just an Ugly Stik Tiger with 65lb braid and 40lb mono leader. I think the only reason my buddy started calling it that is because I put an 11/0 TC circle hook on it and tend to put very large baits on it. Just a nickname. Lol

For reference I am 6ft and 220. Any estimates on weight? I probably over estimated with my adrenaline rushing.
Thanks for the congrats!

Alright, just did a quick measurement. From my shoulders to my knees (pretty close to the length of the fish judging by the picture) is about 39 inches. Don't know if this changes anything or not, plus he was a pretty healthy fish.

Re: New PB last night (7/10) - 07/14/14 01:51 PM

Congrats. I'd say 35lbs. I weighed a 40" that looked similar and light on eggs and weighed 39.5lbs. That was fun but on a throw line. Yours on a rod is super special, congrats on the effort to keep trying. thumb

Nice fish man!! You need to come up to Kansas with us when we make our trips!! I'll put you on multiple fish over 50 if you do!! I know the kansas river like the back of my hand!! We ran some limb lines the other day, ended up landing a 58# flattie, we've also pulled out 3 more in the 50s and one 60 while handfishing, pretty successful year so far, spring is by far the best time to hit the kansas river though for trophy flats on rod and reel, so we should plan a trip!! We are coming back to texas next week/weekend man. The fish should be done on the nest down there, time to chase some post spawn flatties, boats up and going also. So that'll open alot more spots for us when we go!!
