You may have to try different depths until you find them biting....no bites in 30 minutes move down to another spot

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 02:17 PM

I have a hard time keeping punch bait on the hook, tried using a stick, pliers and latex gloves to get it on the hook but just seems to fall off more than anything....

Get a piece of aluminum 1/8 inch by 1 1/2 by 12 inches. Push hook into bait, pack bait around hook, use paddle to push bait around hook and pull hook out.

Do treble hooks with springs on the help any?

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 02:48 PM

#6 treble hooks is what I used when using punch bait. The springs didnt make much difference to me

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 02:50 PM

Just grab the bait with your hands. It's not a bait that's meant to stay on for long periods of time. If you cast it once it should be good for a while. But re casting a few times will make it come off. Seriously, just grab a chunk and mend it onto the treble hook. Springs will work. But just a regular treble hook is fine.

I grabbed one of my wife's weeders to use as a poker. Filed down the sharp edges and points.

The thinner the device is that you use in punch bait, the more you cut it up and makes it thinner in the hot months

I know it probably isn't the best day to try but I'm going to Eagle Mountain for a little while this afternoon....any advice?

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:31 PM

Just get a good stick off the ground that has blunt end, if your bait is too thin and keeps falling off your hook then you can add flour to your bait to harden it a little, when casting with punch bait and bobber i like to pitch my baits rather than cast, for me i dont want the bait to have a hard impact that will cause the bait to loosen on the hook. Like mentioned before rebait periodically and keep moving until you find fish. When i fish for channels punch bait and slip cork is the way i like to fish 90% of the time.

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:35 PM

You can't pack the bait on with a stick near as well as a paddle or paint stir stick. If you pack sure shot in the hook you can't throw it off

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:38 PM

I have heard a lot about sure shot but haven't been able to find it....where can I get my hands on some?

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:43 PM

Pick it up in Denton or Decatur or look them up and call to order

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:45 PM

I take the bait and ball it up on the hook really tight

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:48 PM

Hmm......I'm just a few miles from Decatur......may have to get some of that....

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:48 PM

How big of a ball do you use?

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:50 PM

Good bait! I didn't use any last year but the previous two years I luckily never got skunked on it.

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 03:55 PM

Just enough to cover the trebble hook but keep the points exposed. I would catch a ton of channels doing it this way

Thanks for the advise guys, it is much appreciated.

Same thing I use. Use a slip cork so you can adjust the depth of your bait. This is how I fish when targeting channels, it can be a lot of fun. Throw out some range cubes, give it about 20 minutes, no bites then move on. Punch bait only needs to stay on the hook for about 15 minutes any way.

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 05:06 PM

If you put the bait on with your hands you will see a difference. Just bring a bar of lava soap and a rag. I used to use sticks, and finally said to heck with that. If I can cut up shad and hold slimy cats I can touch some punch bait.

As a kid I was the designated Catfish Charlie doughball maker for trotlining. I never figured out how to get that stink off after four runs a day. Punch bait made me a happy camper.

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 05:43 PM

This time of year, here's the easy way to catch cats on punch bait:

1. Stay shallow, less than 5ft. Clearer the water, deeper the fish.

2. Go to the fish. I never use chum. I constantly move and dabble punch bait into cover in the shallows until I get a bite with bait setting for less than 30sec. Once I find a bite, anchor up and keep catching.

3. As soon as they shut off, move on. The bite isn't going to get any better ince they shut off, so go find another group.

4. Once you anchor up, use shad or perch and cast out the other side of the boat with a clicker on for Blue/Yellow cats.

This is all just my $.02, hope it helps someone.

cattail blooms shredded and stirred in will help keep it on the hook

Cotton fibers are supposed to work, also.

Re: Punch bait under a bobber? - 03/24/13 08:38 PM

Hook a raisin on a short shank hook and that will work too. I have caught thousands of channel cats that way along with a few blues.

Using a stick or not your going to get it on your hands. I take a rag and figure I will spend time in bath when I get home. Try some under the arm pits and see what you catch LOL Just Kidding.
Just get used to it LOL the stuff works under a bubble just fine and as others have said if your not getting bits in 15min time to move and this could be as little as 20ft or so.

Pick up some Danny kings punch bait for big blues. The bait will stay on hook for long time with slip cork.

I use the metal fondue forks. They come with all the chep Fondue sets.
Also you can add cattails to thicken if it gets too loose. Or a tab of oil if gets to dry.
