Older Whaler 17 sport. Bench seats (thwarts) make moving fore and aft, a drag. Planning a conversion to center console. The nearly flat bottom gives nice stability—very resistant to rolling motion (side to side).

In an 18' boat I think you are wise too remain not sure in 20 MPH wind.

You have been on Twok in 30mph NW winds in the catamaran! Lol

Trust your gut here. Not being sure is your first best indicator for not going.

You can work up to it, but this isn't really the time of year to be working up your rough water experience. Once you get wet, hypothermia slows down your thinking and reaction time, turning an uncomfortable situation into a life threatening test.

Wait till the water warms up and then go out in the higher wind days to build your boat handling skills and confidence.

Good advise from Ed. I have a 1998 20' Sea Ark, flat bottom. Has worked great for me. I hate fishing in high winds, so I don't. A Tyee should work well. They are great V hulls.

This thread is pretty weak. Someone needs to start posting pics along with their description. I keep having to Google everyone's boat.

I got an 04 23ft War Machine that loves high wind and rollers! When my buddys look and me and sez “Nobody out on the lake today? Do you think it’s safe to go out??? I tell em “nobody around here is crazy as us and we bout to hammer em!” I carry an extra hurricane suit so they stay dry and toasty! Can’t wait to team up with my good buddy Littlefeather this Saturday and do battle!

Just bought an Excel 203 Bay and am starting to rig it out. Ordered a Terrova 80 lb with Ipilot. Have it on Palestine this weekend running a few jugs to break it in. So far, I'm impressed. Much nicer than my 17 foot Express.

Re: Cat boat - 02/04/18 06:51 PM

So I am a bass fisherman turned catfish nut. Here's my 1990 Ranger 360V with a 1989 Johnson 150 GT on it. Bought it in rough shape. Redid the carpet, rebuilt the rotten deck, padded the front deck, added a deck extension, a bunch of motor work was done, replaced the trolling motor and batteries, threw 10 rod holders on it, a couple power poles, and helix 10 Mega SI on there all to chase cats.

Hard to convince myself to get the center console I would love to have when this boat is working so well for me.

Lund Tyee is a great boat. I ran a Tyee 186 GL fiberglass Lund and loved it. Heavy, steady and takes waves well. Heald up great even when run in Lake Erie rough chop.
