Removing peeling latex paint from large areas

Removing peeling latex paint from large areas - 06/29/17 05:01 AM

I really need to repaint my Dad's house but there's a large amount of scrapping in order before I can even begin to prime and paint. Any DIY methods for removing old paint efficiently that doesn't require hours on a ladder scrapping?

If it's already peeling off by itself, I'd go with the power washer.

It won't peel all off, but it'll take most of the work out of it.

Power washer was something I'd thought about- just wasn't sure if it's would make more mess than it was worth.

Oh yeah . You're gonna have paint chips all over the place . wink

Beats the heck outta standing on a ladder with a scraper , though .

Whether you scrape, power wash, or grind it off, you're going to have a mess.

I would use a broom or leaf rake to bring all those chips together.

After you take the peeling paint off use Zinsser Peel Stop, available at Home Depot, it does a great job of preventing future peeling.

You should power wash it anyway. Not only will it make short work of the peeling. It also cleans the surface up. Plus in the summer heat it will help keep you cool.
