How long will monofilament line last??? - 10/16/08 02:12 PM

Hey Guys. Wal-Mart had all there P-Line (and every other brand) marked down to $2 yesterday, so i stocked up. (There is still a lot left at the Wal-Mart in Addison if anyone needs some line) My question is, how long will the line last or can fishing line go bad? If so, how long is it good for?

Thanks for the help!

Depends on how it is stored. heat, uv light, etc.

keep it inside the house and you should be good for a long time.

Was it the P-Line FluroClear?

Hey-just FYI - that Walmart (Addison) is selling "returned" spools that are only about
1/2 full-or less! I guess $2 would be about right for those.

I hope that's not the case but if it is, they got me. I checked em out last night and spooled a couple of reels and they looked band new. My cousin called me and said that the store in Little Elm had the same deal.

I've tested trilene xt that has been sitting in my hot garage for a few years. No signs of lessened strength. I suspect that light is worse of a problem than heat. I've heard that ozone will degrade line, so if you keep in garage put in an airtight bag. If you can store inside or better the fridge I think it will last forever. Seems like the copolymer really ages well.

In contrast fluorocarbon becomes junk pretty quickly when it gets hot or exposed to UV. Regular mono seems to loose about 5 to 10 percent of strength after getting cooked too long.
