Honestly you can buy paint alot of places that does a great job when you learn how to thin it properly and get some time in with the brush. Createx is good and wiked colors is better than that, but you can get some cheaper paints from Walmart and hobby lobby that does lay out nice. I have about 6 different brands and they all have some positives and negatives about them. You can pick up apple barrel at Walmart for around a buck for 2 oz and folk art from hobby lobby around a buck fiddy.

These are painted with folk art paints

Good advice from Brad. Acrylic paint consists of a pigment suspended in acrylic polymer emulsion. Water is used as the medium for the acrylic polymer and pigment mix ...every paint has its own properties. Some have finely ground pigments and others much courser pigment. The mix of polymer to pigment may vary. In short ...they will spray differently so get one you like and use it until you get comfortable with how it thins out and how it sprays thru your airbrush.

Just bought a bottle of FolkArt acrylic paint in a color Createx doesn't offer. Sprays very well when cut to about 70/30 and sprayed thru a .66 needle/tip. Haven't tried a smaller needle/tip size but it looks great. Anyone have a tip on how to mask gill plates off without cutting tape or stencils every time? hmmm

Give me an example of the gill plate. You can cut reusable stencils out of plastic milk bottles.

All good ideas....I'm trying to keep the gill plates clean of overspray, etc. when spraying sides, back and belly. Was using frisket to do this but its a PIA to cut out for every lure. I took some clear plastic and traced the gills of the lure then used those images to cut a plastic playing card in the gill shapes...just position them over the blank, secure top & bottom, to hold them in position, and spray away. Makes a clean gill edge with no mess. I've read you can do this with sheet foam from Michael's too....just don't have any handy.

bois you might try some liquid masking. you just brush it on the area you don't want to paint, let it dry (it dries in a minute), spray and then just rub your finger over the masked area and it rolls right off. quick and easy and it gives you the opportunity to do any shape you want anywhere you want it. pretty easy.

Wow....I totally forgot about your earlier post on liquid masking....that may be the perfect solution. Can you tell me what its called and where to get it? PM me if you want. Thanks for your input BC (this could save me a lot of time and effort.) thumb

here's the stuff. i got it at asel's down in dallas but they have several locations. you should be able to find it at hobby lobby. might be a different brand but it will do the same thing. i've used it on a number of baits and it seems to work great.

I tape my bills really quick and generic then use that liquid mask to finish it off all pretty like, I might try it on my hook hangers on my next lure.

For a really fine lined gill ill use a red sharpie.

Liquid frisket....can't think of a better solution. Frisket without all the cutting and positioning. Forget the playing cards and tape. Gotta get some asap. Good folks on this forum...willing to share opinions and ideas. Thanks again BC.

Found a bottle of this stuff an Hobby Lobby ($$) in the tube paints area. It even has a cap that allows you to draw fine line detail. Can' wait to experiment around with it. Another good find by Basscat Dad.
