Canyon Lake 10-13

Canyon Lake 10-13 - 10/14/16 03:21 AM

Morning was a little warmer than normal. Top water started out slow and plenty of boats gave up. So, when the massive school did decide to hit the surface me and a couple others had it all to ourselves. Massive school and they were hungry. Still nothing with much size, but lots of fun! If they aren't on the surface they are under the boat! Over 20 fish CPR'd! Cmon cool consistent weather!

Canyon Lake has some really deep spots in it. this school was 77 ft deep but 100ft away there was several schools on the surface.. It was just madness lol. When the top water school your on goes down, they tend to go straight too the bottom and you can drop slabs on them. It's been really fun this last month.. Every cold front gets them going.. Can't wait for consistent cool temps to keep the water temp cooling.

I don't fish canyon but I have a question - looking at your graph pic there is no thermocline. Has Canyon turned over already? Seems to early but the lack of thermocline makes me wonder. All the lakes I fish the thermocline is still about 40-50 feet on any given day. The turn over should happen within 2 weeks

Canyon is a lake like no other.. I honestly don't remember ever seeing a thermocline on that lake. It doesn't have seasons like most lakes around Texas.

Those stripers really get active after cool fronts. I first started catching them on top water in late September when the water temp went from 84 down too 81.. Then it warmed back to 82-83 and they didn't hit the surface again until water temp got below 80 degrees.. Then it warmed back up and last time they were on the surface and water was 76-77 degrees. So if this continues we probably won't see the top water action until water is below 76 degrees. My best days are when I launch the air temp is in the 50's and water temp is cooler than it was the last time I caught them.
