Fish are hungry on RC!!

Fish are hungry on RC!! - 05/03/16 04:38 PM

The fish have been stacked up the last couple of days and have been really hungry. I fished the last couple evenings and pulled in over 100 fish each time, many smaller fish and juve hybrids. Caught one keeper hybrid, I had to step on him to get him to 18" but we put him back so he could get to see 27". We caught enough keeper whites to make a nice meal.

Most of the fish were in 22-28' FOW. We fished a couple different points, mainly Dog Leg and Pelican Island. Dog Leg keeps you out of the North wind....Pelican had a lot of birds working and made them easy to find.

Hasn't been any really good topwater yet. Every now and then a school will rise up for a few minutes and then vanish. Best bite has been off the bottom in 20 to 28'. Mornings and evening have been great the last few days. Watch out for the winds, this lake can really live up to the nickname Ocean Chambers when the wind is above 15/20 mph. Best color seems to be chartreuse right now.

LOTS AND LOTS of small hybrids mixed in with the white bass, so be very careful when tossing them in the cooler.

I use Redneck Fish'n Jigs in the 2 ounce ssize. Only slab I use and the only weight I use. As far as colors, chartreuse seems to be preferred at the moment. I like to bounce it on the bottom twice only lifting up about 1-2' and then the third time I lift up about 7'. 1/3 of the bites have been when the lure is dropping so be sure to keep the line tight on the descent.

These fish were all caught on a slab from RSR lures....rsrlures.com. Phil makes a chartreuse one with some flash to them. They seem to attract the bigger fish for sure. Its the lure that has pulled in the bigger hybrids for me. I would check him out. He also makes some really nice 5" sassy shad swim bait that are perfect for this lake. I have caught a lot of big fish on those as well.

I also have been catching them on a home made in-line spinner. I make them about a 1/2 ounce and they cannot resist the flash.

As far as the evening bite goes, you can find them on the points, but they seem to be chasing the bait up against the banks, you have to watch for birds and then they are on the move. We have been top watering them in the evenings as we chase the birds shallow.

Got a late start yesterday so I fished for a few hours after dark. Put out the lights and it didnt take em long. Caught about 60-70 sandies and crappie. Funny, fished with minnows and jigs. The jigs were 1/8 oz with little silver Arkansas shiners and they out did the minnows two to one. You guys are right caught several hybrids mixed in with the big sandies and threw them back. Good night, nice and calm and I was the only boat anywhere around. Ended up keeping a total of 25 sandies and crappie for a fish fry.
