Hybrid , striper has bigger head and more pronounced stripes. I caught a few hybrids that had straight stripes but their heads and silvery flags shown whitebass characteristics...
These were all hybrids (except one 17.5" whitebass )

The top picture looks awfully like a striper but the stringer looks all like hybrids to me that "lean" towards Striper instead of the white bass. Hybrids are a cross so they can "lean" either way

That's a hybrid, Bruce, and a nice one. Probably one of those escapees from Cedar Creek or RC

Looks like a striper to me just so fat that it stretched the stripes like that

Also if that top dorsal fin was sticking up you can easily tell what it is

A striped bass to me. Lake Livingston dam?

Re: Hybrids or stripers ? - 03/07/16 06:38 PM

Yes sir its a Livingston dam fish. This is where TPWD collects their brood mature fish for hatchery by the use of electrocution. Usually I can tell right off the bat if its a hybrid or striper, but this fish is a little tricky to identified. Proves here on this thread. Some say's it's hybrid other's say's it's striper.

I think it's a successful off spring between a hybrid and a striper. Its a strybrids. confused

Side by side pics of a hybrid I caught on Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston. I see no diff. One died hours ago other just caught, looks fresher. Conroe absolute got no stripers.

Second looks like a stripe! They both look like fish tacos to me! Nice photos

They look like turduckens to me now. You can catch! Those a great fish! I think the "turkey feather" used by TPWD made the fish difficult to distinguish. Yes, I work with the state for stocking permission to stock our home lake and fully aware of the broods catching at LL dam during the spring smile

??? As far as I know, the patches should be the same. Striper or hybrid striper.
Only patch that's different is on a sand bass.

My expert GUESS would be: They are both hybrid striper.
Blood test for DNA would be the only positive ID.
Eat him or CPR. He ain't a record anyway. lol

I'm pretty sure thats a very fat striper. I know it has broken/shifted lines but many of them do, especially ones that fat. One feature I've always noticed on fat hybrids seven plus pounds that becomes more defined the larger they get is the hump they develop at the start of the dorsal fin that resembles that of a very large white bass. Striper don't seem to exhibit that feature like hybrids do. If you look closely you will see what I'm talking about on the two fish pictured. Exceptional fish for the Livingston area!

Hybrid. As noted the head is much too small to be on a striper.

Good looking, fat and healthy fish regardless . It is most definitely not a crappie, cat nor perch. Dorsal color does not show a purple hue, which is indicative of Hybrids.
