SABINE on Fire - 02/21/16 02:08 AM
Spent 2 days on the SABINE and absolutely DESTROYED the fish. Ended a 2 day trip with 215 Sandbass and 1 2#Yellow. At least 25fish over 3#s.

I'm leaving Thursday morning for 4 days at the Sabine. Hope the rain doesn't swell the river too much. Looking forward to another great trip, always a blast!

Yea. Watch the flow if it gets too high it can be really tough. You have obviously experienced that same as I have.

Nice looking fish! I look forward to fishing the Sabine every year. It's been an annual trip for the last seven or eight years. Nothing like it.

Yep, but I'm going either way. The only really BAD trips we've had were when the river was in flood stage. If Jane's low water ramp is usable we can usually find some fish stacked up somewhere. After 5 weeks of working 6-7 days a week, I need a vacation, and no better place to unwind!

Spinners and road runners worked best

My son and I made the drive from FloMo to Carthage on Saturday afternoon and fished the Sabine on Sunday morning using our kayaks. Took us a little while to find a school, but when we did the action was fantastic. We caught about 50 between us, kept none, and what was amazing to me was the consistently large size - both length and girth. Maybe 4-5 fish under 13 inches, the rest were all 13-18 inches and hefty. We found that the largest lures we had in our box worked best - larger lures than we would normally use for spawning whites. Rooster tails, Mepps spinners, spoons and a crank bait all worked. Since we know we had found a large school, we experimented to see if any lures in the box did not work, and about the only one that did not was my "go to" bait in the DFW area - the L'il Fishie (probably not getting deep enough in a fairly strong current). A long round trip drive for half a day of fishing, but well worth it. The legend of the Sabine whites is valid.
WoW. Nice hall. I bet that was a blast!

There is a long sand bar at River Ridge that you can bank fish.

We put our kayaks in at the bridge about 8 miles southeast of Carthage, on FM 2517 I think. We also talked to a group in canoes that put in at the bridge on Highway 59 and were making a 2-3 day trip down the river. We did see a couple people fishing at both of these bridges. A boat would really help though, and it can be paddle powered because you don't have to go far to cover several bends and sandy shores that hold the fish.
