A little project I've been doing

A little project I've been doing - 02/04/16 06:36 AM

Rebuilding a Key West 1720.
On January 4th if this year, I found a little 1720 that needed love, in Oklahoma City. The price was right because they couldn't see the possibilities that a little TLC could provide.

The boat was a 1999 Key West,1720. She had a 1999 Yamaha 90hp with 110 pounds of compression across all three cylinders, ran good and shifted into forward and reverse, just fine. I brought her home that night.

She was ok but the windshield was missing, had rod holder basses mounted everywhere and the trolling motor was shot.

I decided to paint her to match my 2015 Key West 230BR. So in the shed she went.

After paint, I installed a new rub rail and I put on a new windshield along with new, LED bow and stern lights. Moved the trolling motor battery up under the console, installed a new horn and horn button, pulled new trolling motor wire, added a new tm 12 volt outlet and got all the pumps and electrical working as they should

At this point, I decided to change out the perfectly running Yamaha 90 and I had Rockwall Marine install a brand new 90 hp Evenrude E-tec. (Thanks Tommy) My reasoning for this upgrade was that I am giving this skiff to my 21 yr old son, who goes to school at Texas A&M Maritime academy in Galveston and I wanted to feel sure he would be able to get back to the dock without problems. And my nephew, Paul Matlock, will be fishing this boat during the summer months at Cedar Creek and other area lakes for striper and hybrids

Tuesday of this week, I got the logo and letters on and all I'm waiting on is the new Riptide to get here, tomorrow so he can come and get her, this weekend.

I hope he enjoys this little rig, while at school and for many years to come.

Oh, I forgot to mention. Sea trials this past Saturday, on fresh water:
Two men at 215 pounds each
One 14 yr old at maybe 120 lbs
32 gallons of fresh fuel
15" Viper prop
20 mph wind

We got about 38 mph at 5500 RPM's
Jumped up pretty quick but I may put trim tabs to get her up faster

Beautiful work, good job. What a great gift.

My two cents is put a ($25) hydrofoil on that motor and you'll jump up on plane right off.

Nice job, your son is set for fishing now for sure.
Like the idea of a new motor for peace of mind while out on big water.

It was, for sure, a fun project. But once I got started, I couldn't quit. It's not perfect but it'll do for years to come.

Paden came home on Thursday, after school. We did some finish up work on the boat like install the trolling motor, paint the trailer fenders and a few little things.

He took the boat to Cedar Creek on Friday afternoon, to sea trial it and hang out at the lake house with friends. Found out the bilge pump float switch was bad. He came home, yesterday and we replaced the switch and put in a new/bigger pump, and I had wired the trolling motor plug backwards and I fixed that and painted the trailer fenders.

He loaded up the boat and left this morning at 10:00 to go back to school. (He has Watch at 4:00 pm.)

I'm gonna miss him and now I need a new project boat. Lol

That gotta be a fun and great satisfying project on your part! Great job! I wish I studied at AM Galveston. Great flounder holes and easy access to the bay and the jetties.
