Anybody else fish Lake Whitney this past weekend? - 08/26/15 03:22 PM

I fished the Cedron Creek/McCown Valley area Saturday night and sunrise Sunday. No luck fishing with artificials. Tried all lures at all depths and all colors. Sand bass on the surface Sunday morning but they were not hungry. Hardly any other fishermen and those I saw did not seem to have any better results. Any suggestions?

i fish whitney 3 to 4 times a week been getting limits of sandbass and strypers almost every outing.you have to put in a lot of leg work.all sandies have been keepers exept a few.90% of strypers are in the 12 to 15 inch area but still fun.i throw all fish back execpt once a week i will keep enough for dinner for myself.i fish and move.in and out unless they are schooling.heres a video from last thursday.my wife told me i was stupid for going out because of the rain had one of my best days numbers wise ever. counted 102 sandbass and 30 stripers.when the video starts i had already been in the same spot for around a hour and fifty mins.after the video ended stripers came in sandbass left.need to get a go pro, phone kept running out of memory.would have liked to film the whole thing.i keep saying larry in the video because he didnt want to go with me that day.

sorry but to answer your question the fish at whitney are some of the most finicky fish anywhere unless you know the lake.you change one thing about your lure or technique its over.i find weekdays are way more productive then weekends.only thing from you doing well out there is time and money.we have all been in your place.i have almost given up on whitney plenty of times but in the end it has paid off.goodluck to you.you will figure it out

Thank you for your suggestions. Is there any reason why you consider the fish finicky in Lake Whitney? Are certain characteristics of the lake responsible? I will be up on the lake fishing the weekend of 9/12. If you have any suggestions as to what bait , lures to use, where to go, depth , etc. I sure would appreciate it.

I will say this .... Whitney is the most unpredictable lake in the state of Texas...
Prepare to spend lots of time and fuel ........
I've fished it a lot ... Some days HERO ... More days ZERO ...
It's a nice place to relax and fish ..... Not necessarily CATCH ......
It's not on my favorites list .......

Well thank you for all the suggestions. I am still at a loss as to why this lake would have more challenges to it than the others. I came from the northeast to Texas and want to fish for Striper. I chose Whitney over Buchannan because of the low water level at Buchannan at the time of my decision. That has since changed. I will just have to make the most of it until dock lease is up. Many of the lures you suggested I used this past weekend. Thanks again.

We fish Whitney once or twice a month. It can be hit or miss and they can be finicky as to the color or type of lure that day. The slab I find that works best there is from RSR and is gold on one side and silver on the other. If you can find the sandies schooling, you can usually catch bigger fish slabbing beneath them. Other days, we have done better trolling hell-pet rigs.
As far as locations, it is pretty much standard fare. Look for roadbeds, humps, and creekbeds. Use your electronics and look for active fish. Keep in mind that sand bass/stripers will herd shad up on these humps and things to feed. Don't be afraid to check all the depths. Somedays they are in 10 ft some they are in 35 ft.
Oh, and for the surfacing fish. There are a lot of small largemouth bass chasing shad this year. This might have been what you were seeing. Just keep at it. You will figure it out and learn to really like it there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will give the lures you suggest a try. In particular those color combinations. I understand what you are saying about the largemouths but I saw stripes on those surfacing fish.
