PK Fri June 5

PK Fri June 5 - 06/06/15 01:03 AM

My brother and I fished PK this morning, here is the report.

We met at South D&D at 4:30 AM. We caught bait near the ramp for the next 1.5 hours, netting 27 5-8 inch gizzard shad. I had also purchased 2 dozen perch the night before. We had them as a back up plan in case we ran out of shad or weren't able to catch any.

We went straight to the damn and started fishing the same points that had been productive for us last year, although we were in slightly different locations due to the lake rising. We caught our first fish almost immediately, an 18 inch striper. We continued fishing the dam area for the next several hours catching a total of 10 stripers, 2 8-pounders, 1 12-pounder, and the remaining 7 all in the 16-22 inch range. About half the fish caught, were caught on perch...including the 12-pounder. It was caught on a 2 inch long perch.

Water clarity near the damn and Neely's Slough wasn't too bad, but it really starts to get worse as you head up the lake. North of the peninsula looks like chocolate milk.

Awesome! Where do you buy perch?

I bought the perch at Brazos Bait and Tackle on Mineral Wells HWY. They are $8 a dozen. The price seems a little high, but its convenient for me and it helps support a local bait shop. I normally buy the bait the day before I go.

Re: PK Fri June 5 - 06/09/15 09:12 PM

We had another fun day on PK today. My 13 year old daughter finally had some time off from ballet and somehow I was able to get her awake at 3 AM, so she was able to fish with us.

Fishing report is roughly the same as the 5th. We caught shad at South D&D and caught fish near the damn and Neeley's Slough. Shad seemed to be a lot more abundant than the previous trip. Water clarity is roughly the same. There did seem to be a lot more floaters today.

My daughter, Hailey, caught 2 10-pounders, I caught 1 10-pounder, and my brother started us off with the first fish of the day weighing a little over 6. We also caught 4 fish in the 3-4 pound range and probably around 8-10 of the 16-18 inch fish. The highlight of the day was definitely when we hooked up double 10-pounders.

The 10 pound fish that my daughter caught, was her personal best fish. She had previously caught a 6-pound hybrid out of Bridgeport.

One of the nice things about today was that we didnt see another boat on the water until almost 10 o'clock. I really do love weekday fishing.

All fish CPR'd.

No fishing poles were lost during this trip.

Double double digit fish.

To start off I'm not a striper guy at all. I plan on being at PK this weekend and may try to chase some striper if we can. My question is, how are you rigging the shad? Heavy weight above the shad and set on the bottom? Similar to catfish rigs? Any info would be helpful. Thanks again for your time. Thanks for the report.

I normally use something similar to this, except I use a circle hook.

Here is a recent thread on rigging shad.

I normally hook the shad across the bridge of the nose.

Most fish we caught were 20 ft down in 30 foot of water.

Hook them though the lower lip.

If you do not own a shad tank they will die before you can fish with them.

Great job! Congrats,I'm envious. Thanks for the detailed report, very helpful. I noticed in your pics that you had a roadrunner jig rigged on one of your rods. Any luck with that? If I don't net any shad or drive to Mineral Wells I was thinking of trolling by the damn with an umbrella rig and roadrunner trailer.

I don't normally troll, but I think trolling an A-rig would probably work fine.

We fished the PK damn area Thursday 18th and it was slower than our previous 3 trips. We only caught 5 fish, but 3 of them were decent size. We ended up with a 7, a 9, and an 11.5 pounder. This gave us 2 PBs. One for my friend Andy, with the 7 pounder. He is just getting back into fishing after not fishing since his teen years. And one for my brother who caught the 11.5 and the 9 back-to-back. My brother's lucky green fishing shirt paid off. The last time he wore it, he broke his PB twice in 1 day with 2 9-pound hybrid out of Bport.

We didnt catch any fish after 9 AM. Smaller bait seemed to be the trick, even for the big fish.
Take a look at the mud line in the bottom pic.

Notice the mudline. This is across from Neeley's Slough.
