I met Ryan (age 15) and his dad Matt last Saturday out on Dam Ridge. They were slabbing for sandies and fishing buddy Ed D in his boat and I in mine were doing our usual thing with Mepps spinners. Ed and I were hauling in magnum whites and an occasional hybrid on just about every cast while Ryan and Matt were catching one every now and then on their slabs. Finally, they couldn't stand it any longer and asked what we were using. I told them about Mepps and showed them a #4. Well, yesterday I ran into them at the same spot. They had bought some Mepps but were having only mild success. I demo'd the technique for them a couple of times and they caught on. They joined the forum yesterday and posted their results - 100 whites and 10 hybrids caught on Mepps.
Today I was back out at Dam Ridge and so was Ryan and Matt. We were on the magnum whites again. Here's a pic of them each with nice whites on the line.
Don't know how many they ended up with, but I had 100: 90 whites, a 24 1/2 inch hybrid (pic below), 4 keeper yellows, 4 cats and a crappie. I was out from 4:40 to 8:15PM. The fish were on the west slope of the ridge from 24 ft down to 30 ft.
For those wondering about how easy or hard it is to learn Mepps method, maybe Ryan and Matt will add their comments.
