Eric,

Finally got it! WOW! Man I am looking into upgrading my graph either btwn a X-28 or one of those. I have been waiting on you to get it so I can check it out. What do you think so far?
I am going down to the shack this wkend, are you going down?

How long ago did you take those off your graph? The reason I ask is because of the water temp. is that cold, I will probably Trophy Blue it instead of striper/hybrid fish. MMMMMM 40lb blues- lets go!

Re: side images on Tawakoni - 02/09/07 04:28 AM

I took the pictures last sunday, the surface temp was actually 39 degrees early morning. I got a 32 pound blue but I was doing more looking around with the new graph than anything. I like it real well, the gps capabilities are almost as neat as the side imaging. I will probably be up there on mid day saturday and I plan to hook up with some big blues sunday. Give me a call.

P.S. Please send bait!

Hummingbird has a winner with that unit! I saw a demo at the boat show and was very impressed. Enjoy it ewilson.

Man those are some sharp images. I really liked the unit but like js, couldn't convince the wife I NEEDED it. smile Like the other guys said please send more pictures when you get them.

One cool thing for me is I am going to their factory next week and give some training on our equipment they have there. I saw their name on our calender and emailed my manager and said put me down to give the training. I was thinking maybe they might have 1 or 2 of these units just laying around that need to be tested out. LOL

Those are some good looking pic. I have a question. Where is the transducer at? I have heard that it can be knocked off very easily.

If you would like to see MORE Side Imaging examples from users go to:

Yahoo Side Imaging Forum

It has side imaging snap shots from all different kinds of fishing environments.

Re: side images on Tawakoni - 02/10/07 12:09 AM

The unit I got is the 797c2si. As far as the transducer getting knocked off easily, the transducer has to be mounted low enough that nothing interferes straight out from either side so you end up mounting it lower than you would a normal straight down shooting transducer. It has been a bit of a challenge to mount on my boat but some boat hulls are easier than others. It's like learning to read a graph all over again but I think with time it will prove to be an invaluable tool for putting more fish in the boat. This unit just might put a dent in viagra sales.

It paints a pretty picture and I'm glad you like it...
Sounds to me they gave up some physical functionality for imaging sake.

I'll stick to Lowrance/Eagle products. They opened my eyes to real underwater imaging.

Fish on!

Congrads on the new unit. I've got a 997 SI Combo on order right now through BPS.

Transducer placement is key of course but I've been studying it and may even use 2 transducers. One for the sidescan and another for higher speed running.

They talk all about such on the yahoo users forum mentioned above.

I guess if putting your transducer 3 inches lower is giving up physical functionality. But I can now answer your question "where do they go when they're not there?".

Re: side images on Tawakoni - 02/18/07 04:23 PM

I need a new unit for my boat this year and am considering the 797c2 si. The side imaging of the Humminbirds seem great, but I cannot afford the 987c or 997.

I'm also considering the Lowrance LCX-28HD which has a bigger screen than the 797. If you had to spend your $, which would you go with?

Thanks!

Re: side images on Tawakoni - 02/18/07 04:45 PM

sputterbug,

For Christmas I got a new Eagle color with 7" display and love it. Would I rather have the side imaging? Anyday of the week!!!!

I mean now instead of "interpreting" what that is on 2D screen, you can now "see" it in 3D. Looking at the images you will be able to tell the exact shape of that hump your fishing. No more guessing on is that a big rockpile or something else.

I am sure when FF first came out there were lots of people who said they will never take the place of flashers, but they did.
I don't know, but would bet Lowrance is going to be working hard on their own version.

After a great amount of research, I am installing the 797c2 si on my new Lund. I wish I had the space in the cockpit for the larger 997 SI unit. My cockpit area will be very cramp for I am going to run the 797c2 Si along with a Lowrance 17M unit. I can run both unit's GPS software at the same time, and alternate the sonar’s. I am interested in see which unit depicts the bottom more accurate.

After spending the last few weeks reading the 797 manual, this unit is going to be fun exploring. Looks like I will be learning this summer how to use my gadgets, with any luck I might get to fish. I love gadgets and the side imaging technology is pinnacle of sonar gadgets IMHO.

Re: side images on Tawakoni - 03/13/07 01:40 PM

Sabot,
Can you run the Lowrance units sonar and just the side imaging of the Hummingbird together. I don't think Hummingbird's 2D is up to par with Lowrances but side imaging could be the future of sonar. If they can be ran together I would be interested in adding side imaging on my boat.

Re: side images on Tawakoni - 03/13/07 02:22 PM

From what the experts have told me, most likely not. For the Humminbird side imaging transducer, it’s an all or nothing technology. From what I understand, the transducer will still be sending out pings which might interfere with the Lowrance unit while you are only viewing the side images. Some think that I might be able to adjust the Lowrance to reduce the interference. Some thing I will try. I will also be installing the transducers on different sides of the transom.

Humminbird Side Imaging uses 455kHz, DualbeamPlus uses 200kHz (20 degree cone) & 83kHz (60 degree cone).

Lowrance 17M uses 200kHz (20 degree cone).

Once I get my boat in the next few weeks, I am going to test out the theory. As a side note, I want to see what 2d technology is the best. If the side imaging technology meets my expectations, I hope the masses will stay with the 2d technology for they will take longer to find the structures. smile
