Reds,Rios, and Redbreast. No Place but Texas! - 07/22/17 01:06 AM

Had a GREAT week of fishing despite the very HOT temperatures. Fished a couple of local creeks and the bite was great with plenty of active fish. The morning bite from sun up till 11 am is the best. After 11am the bite slows down a lot. Been catching good numbers of nice Rios, and Redbreast. Also catching some nice Longear. Sunfish are back on nest. Looks like a second spawn in taking place. Fish are holding by brush piles close to the bank and at the ends of currents. Fish were caught using worms and all were released. Finished the week by fishing with my brother Tom, and a South Texas Legend Guide! We fished for Reds with guide and friend Harry Lamb who has fished both power plant lakes in the San Antonio area for many many of years. We caught 19 Reds and kept a few for the dinner table. We fished from 8am till about 1pm. Harry is a Pro when it comes to down rigging and reading a graph. Side scan is a "fish finder" for sure! We had a great time on the water. The Reds were caught with silver and gold spoons down rigging. After a day on the water we had a great hamburger combo at Toms Burgers and More located just down from the lake. Finishing a GREAT week of fishing with my brother and friend Harry Lamb. It just don't get any better! fish

Thanks Will! Fishing the dog days of summer can be a challenge! flame Catching those fresh water Reds is a big change. Next time I will try rigging a ultra light set up and fighting one of those fish. Should be a BLAST! boxing

Side Note: I bet the fight on a fly rod would be super also. duel Also the fly rod records for the Reds are wide open on both lakes! thumb

Nice report. And even better catching fish

It would be fun to catch Freshwater Reds if/when they get shallowhmmm, fly fishing a lake with sink tip is a chore unless you are sitting on top of a school.

Nueces Canyon looks awesome from reports, cool name too.

Thanks Andrew,Clayton, and Doc for the replies. cheers Andrew: For what I have been told during the summer months Reds start up in the reeds at day break. As it get's hotter they move to deeper, cooler water. hmmm As for the Canyon,it should be very good fishing! coolio Clayton: I have seen ton's of carp hitting the top of water every time I fish Dunlap! I have all so seen em on other lakes as well as rivers. eeks They are calling your name! hooked Doc: Got these on Braunig. A couple of weeks ago caught a bunch on Cally! Red's on the half shell. food

Had a great time Chuck. Need to do it again. Fished last week and caught over 30 keepers. Kept a few for the dinner table. Spoke with Harry Lamb yesterday and he said "They are nailing em"! Reds are active and biting!

Side Note: Will the bite pick-up with this latest rain! Got 3" the other day at the house.

The Red bite is still great. Went out twice this week and limited out easily. Kept some for dinner and released a bunch more.

Nice fish as always Chuck. Seems the Reds have been biting good all summer long. When will the Reds stop biting?

Side Note: Also which of the two power plant lakes would best for kayaking?

Thanks Curtis and dhogdog for the replies. cheers Curtis: Both Cally and Braunig are good kayak lakes. I have seen kayaks on both lakes. Both lakes have reed beds and nice drop offs. Cally is a bigger lake with a lot more coves. Both lakes have nice populations of BIG Bluegill and Redear not to mention Reds and HUGE Channel Cats. I would have to say Cally is the overall better of the two. Just my two cents. 2cents
