Athens, Round 2 This Week

Athens, Round 2 This Week - 07/18/17 06:22 PM

Spent a couple hrs on Athens again this morning. Hit a bunch of boat houses that Brad R told me about. Fishing was good.

I didn't have to do a lot of experimenting this time. A 1/16th oz jig head with a piece of crawler was the ticket. Didn't matter if it was just below the surface, falling, sitting on the bottom or being retrieved. No matter where it was as long as it was in the shadow of the boat houses they wanted it. Ran out of crawlers so I also used pieces og Gulp night crawlers. They worked too but not as good as the real thing.

I didn't bother counting but I think I took close to 30 fish in a little more than 2 hrs. Turned all of them loose except for these 4. That cutting board is 12 inches wide Y'all. The two biggest don't quite span it but they are close!

Fish Tacos for supper! Cheers

Been using Slap-Ya-Mama cajun hot since it came out. Also use Slap-Ya-Mama hot sauce on just about everything. My wife orders it by the case for me.

Flags, great bluegills! Just more proof that the lake records out there don't indicate the largest panfish caught, just the largest submitted. Yours third from the left looks 11"+ and would exceed the length record and likely the weight record, too.

Glad the spot produced for you!

We'll find other locations, too.

.

Great report and some really nice fish !

Any bluegill over 10 is trophy class in my estimation. So glad you had a successful day !

Thanks for the post and pics.
Heard on Linder or In Fisherman today that a 10 inch bull gill is quite likely 10 years old, like a 30 inch muskey.
Great gills but i do let the monsters go and eat the others. The mosnters supposedly dictate the size of the fish in the estuary, but as ive aged, i let the big bass go also.
I bet there isnt a perch in Buchanan that big.
BTW, how much crawler did you leave on those jigs, please.

In most places those would be monster gills, but Athens isn't most places. A 10 inch gill really isn't too hard to get there if you fish it right. The lake is full of 8-10 inch fish and I seriously doubt all of them are 10 years old. It is just a really good gill lake.

I leave about an inch, maybe a little more and hook it on one end so it can do some wigglin'. Toss it out and let it sink and hold on to your rod.
