Trout Fishing in the Cold (Playing Hooky)

Trout Fishing in the Cold (Playing Hooky) - 01/04/17 05:56 PM

I had just a few hours to fish this morning and thought it was good weather to catch a few trout. Cold, cloudy, and just windy enough that there wouldn't be a whole lot of other fishermen on the river. I was right on both counts.

I fished Huaco Springs and caught this little guy after the first few minutes of getting my line wet. There was only one other fisherman there and he left just after I arrived, almost as if he was waiting to be relieved of duty.

It was a good morning. I caught a few more fish before reluctantly packing it in to head back home and get a little work done.

Thanks Chuck! It was cold this morning, but getting a fish on the line seems to warm me up a bit!

Not exclusively. I just started fly fishing again after many years. If there's more than 7 or 8 mph winds I break out the spinning gear.

I was fishing with a small white Roostertail. I've had great luck with those, also the black Roostertails, gold bodied Mepps with silver spinners, and Panther Martins. I caught a nice holdover trout this morning on the Panther Martin while waiting for the TPWD truck to show up.

You call that cold? This was 10:00am in Paris Tx this morning. Note all the white stuff.

OK. I know it isn't a fish but it sure was fun anyways.

I've always thought that as long as it has to be cold, we may as well have some snow to look at!

Side note: Was this a bow hunt or rifle?

Rifle on an MLD tag. They are good until Jan 31 in Lamar County. This was the 2nd deer I took off the place and the freezer is now full. I'll be trout fishing again later this week now that the grocery shopping is done. This deer will be burger by the end of today.

Cold weather is what I associate with cold smoking meats and trout fishing.

Unfortunately, at 14° there is a layer of ice between me and the fish, but it ain't thick enough to walk on!

Thanks! Rooster Tails are great baits for trout and sunfish!

Nice fish. Every now and then it's nice to play hooky especially if fishing is involved.
