The Fall Bite is ON

The Fall Bite is ON  - 10/09/15 06:08 PM

I went out to the golf course this morning. As I was walking out to one of the ponds I could feel that cool north wind in my face. I've started to see alot more surface activity over the last week but this morning the bite was on fire flame I started with a White and Black Betts popper catching some small bass and green sunfish. You could see them coming from 5 feet away to attack the popper. I then had a big bass come flying out of the weed bed and attack the popper with such force that he broke the line. I switched over to larger size 4 foam spider and continued the onslaught of catching small bass and green sunfish.

From what I experienced this morning the Fall bite has begun in the ponds around my area. Lakes and Rivers can't be far behind. banana banana

I was able to fish another pond for about 30 minutes or so this evening. They weren't interested in the top water spider but I caught 5 good sized greenies on a crystal olive woolly bugger in about 15 minutes. Time to plan those Fall fishing trips.

The early morning bite is continuing to be good in the ponds. I'm seeing some more activity in the Lake as well, just not quite there yet.

I was tying on a fly this morning around 7 AM and my ears were cold. When it gets time for me to put on a beanie I know it's Fall!!!!!!

It is definitely on now. I fished the lake this evening. I fished from 5 to 7:15 PM. From 5 to 6 PM I caught 6 or 7 bluegill on live worms. Around 6 PM when the sun dropped to tree level I grabbed the fly rod and popper. It was on fire and just kept getting better. There was a 10 minute period when I didn't think they were going to let the popper hit the water. I didn't measure the water temperature but it was cold on my fly line. The bite finally subsided about 7:15.

I was throwing the popper as deep as I could into the sparse reeds. About 3 small quick pulls on the fly and stop. They would hammer it. Both white and yellow Betts fancy poppers. I ended up catching over 40 Bluegill and 3 bass. Bluegills were 7.5 to 8.5 inches long and weighed 7 plus ounces.

Thanks Jess/Chuck. The lake has been incredible from around 6:30 to 7:15 PM. The shad/bait fish are lighting up the water like stars twinkling in the sky. The big bass are jumping out of the water chasing them. Just being out there at that time the last few evenings has been incredible.

I hope this weekend rain event doesn't screw things up for the fall/winter Crappie fishing. If we get another flood it could mess up the fishing for at least a month. Those Yegua Crappie seem to bite best when the water is clear and there's little to no current.

Good chance it does especially on the Guadalupe River! Forecasters predictions are between 5 to 10 inches of rain starting Friday through Sunday! nuts

Agree 100%. It's a minimum of a week after a normal rain before it clears enough to catch crappie. I learned that the hard way.

Re: The Fall Bite is ON  - 10/22/15 07:06 PM

Fished again last night. The wind was blowing around 20 mph so the top water bite wasn't working in those waves. I used worms on conventional gear and briminators on the fly rod. The fish were packed in tight and aggressive. Most were caught by vertical jigging in an area the size of a 55 gallon drum.

It ended up being another 40 plus bluegill evening. I even took a few for the grease, a very rare occurrence for me.

The one really encouraging thing is that I'm catching bigger bluegill on flies than I am on live worms. That's been consistent over the last week.

Love this fall bite banana

Did you filet those fish, or scale & cook whole? That's a mess of fish to try and scale.

Either way, impressive catch! food

Re: The Fall Bite is ON  - 10/30/15 03:41 PM

Along with the rain came some nasty north and easterly winds the last week. Finally, the wind switched back out of the south yesterday and the fish started biting again. I fished the greenie pond yesterday evening and again this morning. I caught lots of big green sunfish and a few bass off poppers and a minnow pattern Coolshot gave me. I've been searching for a good minnow pattern and I think I found one I like. I tied a few myself. Thanks Jess.

Re: The Fall Bite is ON  - 11/04/15 03:06 PM

Well, we continue to experience mild fall weather. It's November and I'm still having to mow the yard, and sweating while doing it. The lake is about 7 feet over normal due to the recent flooding. The fishing on the lake has been tough so I reverted back to pond fishing for the last week. The rain has been great for the ponds. They are all full and crystal clear.

The fall bite continues to be very good. I've been catching greenies, redear, bluegill and bass on the fly rod. I've been using poppers, briminators, woolly buggers and minnow patterns.
