A Nice Morning on Dunlap!

A Nice Morning on Dunlap! - 06/09/15 12:58 PM

Picked up the EARLY MORNING bite on Lake Dunlap. Fished from 6:30am till 8am the bite was fair, not that much action. I managed to find a small group of Copper nose Bluegill and was able to catch a couple of em. The fish were in the nine inch range and full of fight. I ended the morning with a couple of Channel Cats in the two pound range and a few small Bluegill in the six inch range. The water was clear in some spots and stained in others. The current is very strong due the water being let out of Canyon Lake which is 14 feet over normal pool. Fish were caught using worms with bottom techniques. Fish were in 5 to 8 feet of water holding close to docks. All fish were released. Catching a nice peaceful time on the water. It just don't get any better. fish

Nice Banker. Going early and not staying too long is the way to go in this heat. My fishing buddy and I talked yesterday and agreed that when we go this summer, we will launch at 6:00 a.m. and pull out at 10:00 a.m. Not fishing later, maybe we won't come home feeling like dead men walking.

Thanks for the reply. cheers Yes Sir I know that feeling quite well. flame Just think we have not had a 100 degree day yet. hmmm The HEAT of summertime is right around the corner! whip

Side Note: I also beat the wake boaters and jet fleas being out that early! clap

Well done Banker. Thanks for the report. I made a recon trip out to Lake Placid at the end of last week. Muddy in the main channel - a little better in the creeks. Some floating debris but not as bad as I expected. Current was strong throughout and really rolling in the shallower areas - laying the marker buoys over on their sides... I played around with my fly rod up in the creeks and managed a few bluegills - all on the smaller side. I expect these conditions will continue until Canyon gets down to the target level.

I fished Dunlap yesterday late morning the bite was poor. bang The water had gotten muddy and the current was very strong! By the looks of things it will take week of so for the river lakes to get back to normal providing we don't get a ton of more rain. hmmm

Great pictures!!! Looks like it will be a month or so before things return to normal in some areas. Lake Somerville will probably take over 60 days to get back to normal.

Ponds are all full and clearing up. Fishing was hit or miss for the last couple of weeks. I've been spending more time in the creek lately.

It might be a little longer than a week Mr. Banker. Canyon is falling 9 inches a day. At that rate of release, it would take 19 days to get to normal 909 level. The release rate now is 4838, down only a tiny bit from 4890 a few days ago. The COE may drop the release rate before reaching 909, bringing the downstream flows and levels closer to normal. I hope so. My daughter and I went to launch under 35 last Friday but decided against it when we got there. Too much flow. I've been planning on trying Canyon since there are two ramps open, but have about decided to wait after hearing rumors of 2 hour waits and no parking slots open. And of course, El Nino is flexing his muscles again giving us more rain chances starting Saturday. Oh well. Rain is good and patience is a virtue, so they say.

Re: A Nice Morning on Dunlap! - 06/10/15 11:30 AM

Thanks Joe Ed for the reply. cheers Yes sir the current is very strong on all three major river lakes. I spoke to an angler who fished Placid the other day and he said he had a difficult time launching under the I-10 bridge. He also said it was very difficult to launch under the I-35 bridge as well. Schumann's beach would be your best bet to get onto Dunlap. thumb

Side Note: 50 percent chance of a scattered thunder storm for Saturday. Weatherman stated if we do get rain it would be nothing like what we got a couple of weeks ago. taz

Thanks for reminding me about schumans. I think I'll run out and check it out. I have never perch jerked that far down the lake but I bet we could find a sunny or two.

No problem Joe Ed. cheers Hopefully by Mid July things will get back to normal on the Big Three River Lakes. thumb

Side Note: Tropical system is in the Gulf of Mexico right now. nuts If it hits us it may not be until late August before the Guadalupe River slows down. taz On the bright side it could fill up Medina. coolio

At least you caught some nice fish. woot Mcqueeney has been poor since water is being let out of Canyon. Muddy and strong current are the two words that some up Mcqueeney! Been fishing some creeks and a couple of ponds. Hopefully things will get better on the river lakes.

The Guadalupe has been a mess. Caught a little bass at Cypress Bend yesterday, with the flow down at around 2700. Who knows what will happen with the rain. Long term it should be good news, but it looks like creeks and the Comal for me this summer.

Re: A Nice Morning on Dunlap! - 06/19/15 11:25 AM

Thanks Curtis and Mitch for the replies. cheers With all of the rain we have been having this year and all of the water that has been let out of Canyon Lake, the lower Guadalupe River is going to be a difficult place to fish for the next three to four weeks. nuts Even the water temperature on Dunlap is a lot cooler for this time of year. hmmm I have heard that Lake Wood and Meadow Lake are also very difficult to fish at this time. bang

Hopefully July conditions will get better! coolio

Always love those Dunlap reports. Nice fish Chuck. Looks like (providing we get know more heavy rain) that the river lakes should be getting back to normal in about a week or so. Can't wait to see some BIG DUNLAP RIOS!

Re: A Nice Morning on Dunlap! - 07/02/15 11:31 AM

Thanks "Gitter" for the reply. cheers According to the latest news the Army Corp of Engineers is slowing down the water out put on Canyon Lake. clap This will in turn slow down the current on the river lakes and the water will start to clear and warm up. dance2 Fishing should really improve each day! coolio

Side Note: Busy weekend on the Guadalupe this week. It's the Fourth of July! nuts
