My 1st bluegill on artificial jig

My 1st bluegill on artificial jig - 05/17/11 11:38 PM

I went out fishing on my lunch break today and pulled in 4 gills between 7 & 9 inches. I've been using green & pink Crappie nibbles as bait since my bro-n-law and I did so well on them last Friday. Then I got to thinking, maybe its not the taste of the nibbles they like, but the colors. So I put a red and green tube jig on my hook and caught the gill below. I also caught a really nice 8 or 9" gill on my next cast but I didn't have a chance to take a picture. As I was unhooking him I noticed what time it was and realized that my lunch break was almost over and I was running late. So I tossed the big fella back in and skipped back to work.

Isn't it fun catching them that way? Nice catch, I haven't been able to get into any 9" yet, bet they were fun.

My first fishing expedition after I moved here was on my lunch hour. I caught 30 gills. After that I have been fishing as often as I can. smile

Sounds like a great lunch and the beginning of a new style of fishing! cheers Don't let the tackle monkey jump on your back too much. taz

Those are some nice gills. I like to use those tube jigs and the curly tail versions too. Like Jagg said, keep it simple or you'll end up with 500 colors and only use the same 3 or 4 all the time. For the rivers and creeks around here I've found that white, red, and combinations with those colors work great.

Unfortunatly, that tackle monkey has been riding my back for years. Since I got out of school, moved to the Austin area, and started making a little bit of money, I have frequently found myself in the fishing section of every store that carries fishing gear. I have bought and inherited way too much gear and only use a fraction of it on a regular basis. Mike, its just like you said, I have a ton of colors and styles of lures and jigs, but I only use a hand full of them.
I justify all my gear by telling myself that's its better to be prepared than to be without.

Congrats FP! I personally really enjoy catching sunfish on lures. Be careful because you may build so much confidence that you will only be using lures to fish now. Thanks for the pics.

That's me to a "T". I've got so many variations and colors of the same basic lure that it's ridiculous. I was a boy scout and still stick to "Be Prepared". You will find if you fish often enough and at enough places that a certain color and/or variation will be "the lure" at the right place and right time. The trick is to not get stuck in a rut with a "favorite" color/style combo. Let the conditions tell you what you need to fish instead of using the lure that they tore up last week somewhere else. Good Luck FP! thumb Hope to see more reports of good trips whether you use lures or bait!

Thanks everyone!!

Jagg- I was a boy scout too. I'm glad I'm not the only scout that the "Be prepared!" Motto stuck with.

Dhogdog- lures are pretty fun once you get the hang of them. smile

I caught a 14" Channel Cat on a Grn/wht Road Runner last night at Sachse Pond. You never know what you'll pull out with those little jigs...

Aquiles,

I stopped by the ITT pond but only had my ultra light...kept dragging through the moss. I'll have to come back with my 6'6" rod and try again.

Thanks again for the posts!!!

Sunday I saw a guy pull out a 3 lb bass out of Sachse Pond. Would have been up to 5lb but it was real skinny.

The Bass was caught on a Blue/white tube jig on a slow retrieval.
