Fun on Athens

Fun on Athens - 03/30/18 11:50 PM

Took the float tube to Athens today. lake was a mad house. The Athens High School Bass Team is have a tournament tomorrow so there were a lot of boats tearing the lake up looking for fish. I had to laugh at them because they were ripping by some of the best places on the lake in an attempt to fish the other side. That's the thing about fishing in a float tube, you become real familiar with places because it takes a lot of time to move around so you tend to cover water very thoroughly before moving.

So I kicked my way over to one of my favorite spots and began fishing. Didn't take me too long to find some sunfish and I began to take some fair sized ones like this:

Moved on to another spot and found a pod of bigger fish. I amused myself there for an hour or so and was getting fish like this pretty steadily:

Then I went to a little pocket I know about that usually holds decent sunfish. I wasn't disappointed and took this brute. He measured an honest 11 inches on my tape. Not the best photo but my hands were wet and my phone was slippery:

While I was having fun with the sunfish kept getting interrupted with these pesky things. Ended up with 3 of them:

All the fish were taken with my normal rig of a piece of crawler on a small unpainted jighead. And they were all released to fight another day. All in all a really good day on the water. Probably took about 2 dozen sunfish and 3 largemouths. All is good here in east TX.

Cheers Y'all.

Flags, I ended up getting out today and going over to Purtis Creek. I did pretty well, 6 bass up to around 4 pounds.

That 11" panfish looked great. I haven't seen many gills back up in our cove above 2495 but plan to get out soon and check my favorite spots.

Boat traffic is pretty heavy on the weekends. Since I teach HS I have summers off so I rarely hit it on Sat and Sun for that reason. Not sure how much I'll fish it this summer though. I plan on spending most the summer in my native CO chasing trout in the high country.

Thanks Flags. I guess boat traffic is about the same all across Texas on major water bodies during the Holidays and the summer months!

Side Note: Hope you post your trout trips from Colorado! It will be great seeing some trout catches during the summer months! rockon
