Question for Used Car Guru's

Trading in the 07 Tundra real soon. Found a 16 SR5 4x4 5.7 Crewmax 14K miles with a 3 inch lift yesterday for 40K. Very clean truck.

Good deal? Bad Deal? What should I offer for it? Blue book is between 38-42K. Dealer, not individual.

Just looking for anything that can save me a buck or two.

Start out by taking your truck to CarMax and getting them to write you an offer for it, its good haggling ammo and it will give you a good idea of its value. I have never had any other dealer offer even close to what CarMax has offered me for several vehicles.

What value did you book to get 38-42? Make sure its the retail or from a dealer and not trade in or private party.

I am thinking for 40k you could probably be in a new 2017 SR5...shop around...not sure what area you are in but in DFW area I am thinking that 40k is too much

They are ALWAYS going to low-ball you on your trade-in so you don't feel so bad when they just screw you a little bit. If you do your research and find it's worth $16k in trade and the offer you $9k first around, you might feel good about getting $12k, but you'd be getting hosed. That's how those places stay in business.

I think the price on the new truck is high. SR5 is a lower end trim, and I would think a 2017 4x4 5.7 Crewmax would be around $40k new, so I sure wouldn't pay that for a used 2016 model if it was me, especially given that financing on a used one is going to be worse so you'll lose some there too (assuming you're not paying cash). I'm not pricing the lift into anything because that's a negative for some folks and probably doesn't impact value too much.

Last time I traded in a truck, I knew it was worth $16k-$17k. They offered me $11k first time around. Next time $14k, and I eventually got them up to $17k. They listed it at $21k and still had it for sale 2 months later and had dropped the price to $16,500. Felt like I came out pretty good on that one. And we traded it in on a 2-year-old Tundra (which is basically what your 2016 model is). It was in 2015 and we were buying a 2013 SR5 4x2 double cab with 25k miles, and we paid $24k. I can't think that crew cab, 4x4, and 10k less miles should equate to $16k more money. And I got new tires thrown in also since the factory tires were pretty thin. I'd think $35k would be a very fair price for that truck given that it's basically 2 years old (ask the dealer to go walk his lot and find some 2018 models if he gives you a hard time about saying that).

Like Gander and patriot, I would think you could find a 17 for close to that same 40k.

The problem is it wont come with the several thousand $'s of add on's this truck already has, and at 16k miles and only one model year old its practically new to me still. I personally wouldn't want that, but I think he could still come out better that way as apposed to buying a new one and then lifting it and adding tires etc.

Me: Yall cant give me what I want for my 07, I am keeping it and will try to sell it to an individual.
Dealer: We are prepared to sell you the new one for $37,800 if you will agree to our terms for your trade in"
Me: Call me back when you can agree to "my terms". Hang Up.

Did I go overboard??? They have not called me back. Hopefully they will tomorrow. What would you guys have done.

My thoughts are...say bye and move on...that is a 2016 used with a lift which is of no or negative value in my opinion..2017 models should have some rebates and incentives..

The SR5 is not what you would consider high end model it is a mid level at best...a dealer lift is not worth what they charge for it...another member on here "Stump Jumper" just bought a 2017 TSS 4X4 I believe ...doubt he paid 40k for it...maybe he will chime in

They called me back and told me that the 37,800 was good without the trade. I told them that is still not close to 36,500 I originally proposed. We haggled back and forth on the phone and I finally got the price to 37,200. They are also throwing in 100,000 warranty (which would have cost me about $780) Oil changes are on them as well until 100K. (at least a $1000 value) and I got em to give me 12 car wash certificates. I think its a pretty fair deal. I am going to go down and pick it up today.

yep paid less than 40k. I could have picked up a TRD OR for 39,100. I got the the TSS for the BFG KOs. Put Bilstein 6112s with 2" lift on front for $850. I did not want to go higher and have problems with the CVs or a bro lean. Kind of wish I had gone 2.5" and added shackles at +1. If I had done that I would have added a diff drop. For me it would have to be a great deal to buy used right now. The TSS now has a $4k rebate. With $4k and a easy $3500 dealer discount you will be under 40 unless you just get a bunch of port or dealer adds. You can also give up part of rebate for 0% rate.

I hope you checked the interval on those oil changes. Tundras are now syn with 10k intervals. Maybe $1000 unless you do them yourself like I do.

Why would you expect them to make an offer on your truck sight unseen? The offer would be quite different if it's 100% clean versus if it's got dents/dings/etc.

I wouldn't spend anywhere near $40k on a used half ton truck honestly. JMHO

I am guessing that in Texas you have to trade at the dealer you are buying from to get the sales tax credit. I believe there are some states where you can get the credit even selling to an individual. No way I would ever trade a vehicle without the credit.

Not saying he should trade it somewhere else than he buys because no he wont get the tax break, but I have had it make a few thousand dollar difference when negotiating trade value before if you can produce a written trade offer of $x for it.

I ended up doing that on my last deal. Dealer selling my truck cheap offered me $9k in trade. Another dealer offered to buy it for $11,500 outright. I told him I was going to take it on a trip to Durango, Colorado the following week and told the other guy that I would bring it by for $11,500 but it would have 1,500 more miles on it. He said that was fine. Even with the trade credit, I made $1,500 and saved 1,500 miles on my new truck.
