toyota tacoma 6 cyl

anyone towing with one of these? curious as well it tows. would be towing 3000 to 3500 lbs

It's max rated towing weight is 3,500. It will do it but not very well.

The 2016 is rated to tow up to 6,800 lbs with the v-6...

I would think it would do fine for shorter trips, wouldn't want to tow with it for several hour trips etc. Not that you couldn't but I wouldn't want to.

That said it will probably get close to the same mpg as a full size pickup which would probably handle the task better.

I have had 2 Tacomas and both towed fine. Make sure you have the factory tow pkg. and not just a dealer installed hitch and wire. Factory pkg. has oil cooler, tranny cooler, larger battery, & 7 pin harness in addition to the hitch and wire. Tacomas mpgs are not the greatest but you will get close to the EPA hwy numbers if you keep it around 70 and stock. What really starts degrading the numbers are high RPMs, driving like you stole it, & bigger tires and somewhat lifts. Since I have owned my current boat for almost 30 years I have towed it with a lot of different vehicles and the Tacoma does as well or better than my older F150s and full size Broncos. I towed in OD with my 2009 Tacoma and do it with my 2013 as long as I am on fairly flat roads and not in traffic. I you need a full size truck for other reasons like carrying capacity then buy one. The advantages to the Tacoma is maneuverability and especially resale value. Now I will say if I did not use my Tacoma on my deer lease and utilize 4wd a lot I might have a full size. The off road capabilities of the Tacoma when equipped with the right suspension are great.

even if you did the Tacoma will handle it fine. Now how you handle riding in a Tacoma all day might be a different story. I always say if you want a car like ride then buy a car not an off road capable vehicle. I have different 4x4 trucks most of my life so I am use to the ride. Some complain about the seats. The only issue I have is they are a little low along with the roof. A big bubba is just not going to be comfortable in a Tacoma.

I towed my 18' Skeeter (around 3000lbs) regularly with 2005 Tacoma. It did just fine for the two hour round trip b/t McKinney and Ray Bob. I also pulled it down to Austin a few times. When I left Texas, I towed it from Dallas to North Carolina and it did great.

I actually don't have the tow package, just a class iii hitch and wiring I installed myself. I just keep it out of OD unless I'm sure it won't hunt gears. Lack of the transmission cooler was my biggest concern with not having tow package, but I haven't taken the time to add an aftermarket one. 11 years later I'm still driving it and the transmission shifts like new. The truck has never needed anything but routine maintenance.

A full size would tow better, but I like the Tacoma for the Monday to Friday commute. I've got the itch for a 2016, but here's nothing wrong with my 2005 and there's really no reason to upgrade so I'm holding off. I'll probably buy another Tacoma unless I decide I want a full size to fit three kids in the back seat easier.

I was nosed up to my favorite catfish hole one day when it started raining. I hopped into my 2010 Tacoma to sip a 16oz Coors Light and watch my rods. When I tilted the beer back for a swig, the bottom of the can hit the roof. Just remember to squinch down in the seat when drinking a brew, and you'll be fine.

Pulling a bass boat is not a problem, stopping it quickly is. I've used mine to tow my old boat a few times on super short trips but would never consider towing my 21' boat with it.
To each his own but one panic stop at 70 and you'll not only need another truck - you'll need a new boat.

Braking could be a concern..you gotta use common sense and maintain following distance. Most trailer tires aren't rated for 70 mph anyways.

Also, should clarify with the OP which year hes asking about...the 2005 and newer are significantly larger and I would expect would tow better. I've never driven a first gem Tacoma.

Have a coworker that just got rid of his wifes Tacoma she has been driving it for years and had 275k miles on it, it still ran ok but was having a few issues and trans was starting to act up and a lot of check engine lights that just wouldn't go away. They thought it was a great vehicle so the first thing they looked at was a new one. Said it was a turd, slow, felt like it didn't have power and that the old one was faster. They ended up buying something else.

new ones have some kind of sport/economy switch. people say you have to really get in to the pedal to make it perform From what I have read I am not fan of the new engine. Very little gain in torque and a 36HP gain. HP sells the GP. MPGs are marginally improved over the 4.0. Not sure why Toyota did not put the 4.0 from the 4runner in the new Tacoma.

I have a new 2016 and love it. Mine is a 4x4 with tow pkg, 3" lift and 33's and tows my boat just fine. Always trade offs when you go with a smaller truck, but for my needs it is perfect. My decision was prompted by parking in downtown Houston and my silverado crew just was too tough for that gig weekly.

My 2010 towed just fine. Pulled my boat from S.A. to LBJ, Amistad, and Falcon for the past five years with no problems. But, boys like new toys so I traded it in on 2016 this past Saturday. Love it!!! The new V6 is now a 3.5, 287hp with a 6 speed trans, up 40 horses from the 4.0 in previous tacoma's.

Brings back memories. I had an '86 Toyota with a 5 speed. Called the One Ton, it was the same size as a regular truck with heavy springs, brakes and a slightly lower geared transmission. It had the 2.4 4 cylinder (22REC) fuel injected engine in it.
I traveled pulling the 18 foot Ranger for over half of the 240k miles it had on it when I sold it to buy my Dodge Cummins in '99. Longest one way trip was over 500 miles from GP to Osage Beach. That trip was made several times. I drove it all over Texas as well as several times to Arkansas and a couple times to Louisiana fishing tournaments.

Pulling a boat I got around 18mpg@70mph and running unloaded got 26 or so.

Most people back then thought it was too small but it lasted longer than many full sized trucks and just kept going. I could feel it had more power when I turned off the AC. Towing at 70 was no big deal. Eighty was done when I was late several times and it handled it fine.
