Cylinder 6 coil on a ford Ecoboost coil pack

Got to change plugs on mine this weekend. Back passenger side was a little tight. Think all you could probably see was my feet sticking up in the air from under the hood.

I recently bought an Ecodiesel and joined a forum about them to learn as much as I can about the truck... Them Ecodiesel boys flat out hate Ecoboosts. Its funny to read some of the posts like when a guy says the Ecoboost lacks power and downshifts like crazy to tow a load that an Ecodiesel doesn't even know is back there

Don't get me wrong I love my Ecodiesel although it bugs me that people abbreviate it "ED" I bought it for the fuel mileage. After driving both somewhat extensively the Ecoboost will flat out run circles around the Ecodiesel, and in fuel mileage there is simply no comparison between the two. I believe they are built with two completely different purposes/buyers in mind.

I've heard many times how "that tiny 6 banger" needs high rpm's to produce any power. Pretty obvious that a lot people have never driven an EB and assume it runs like a naturally aspirated engine.

I will say it's little annoying to change plugs every 30-40k miles. It was just 50 bucks and about an hour of my time but still....that's 50 bucks and hour of my time. My mileage dropped to low 16's, which is why I changed plugs. Now I'm back up in the high 18's for the commute. Better than I'm used to and regular was $1.41 at HEB this morning, so I'm not too worried about economy for now....but that may change in another year. You'll be smiling big when oil goes back up, and it will.

Will changing the plugs really give that big of an increase in gas mileage? Reason I ask is I bought my EcoBoost with 62k miles and was getting around 19-20 highway mileage. Now I'm getting 16-17 and have 98k miles. I'm no mechanic but not completely ignorant when it comes to vehicle maintenance either. Just never thought of plugs being the culprit. Sorry to highjack the thread here.

I really couldn't feel any misfires. Just noticed a drop in MPGs. It brought it back up on mine. Gap at .030.

I didn't disconnect much, battery & couple hoses on the driver side. Left the coils connected. They had enough slack to pull the boots out. Pretty easy job. Just need a socket set (with plug socket) and a couple extensions.

Worn plugs can cause a decrease in mileage without causing a misfire. At 98k I'd definitely think about changing them.

Also I would be leary about running aftermarket plugs. Id go with motorcraft. I ran aftermarket plugs in my wife's Nissan and they barely lasted a year before they started acting up again. Went with factory Nissan next go around and problem solved. I believe the Eco's use an iridium plug so if you are going to go aftermarket at least get Iridium.

It's not even my vehicle, my dad took mine for the week and told me to change coils and hoses. And yes, this little 6 banger does have plenty of power, it'll run circles around my 5.4
