Still Catching some nice Carp! Including Pending Cibolo Creek Record ! - 05/16/18 07:40 PM

Myself,Clayton-Wildman of the Navidad, and Rick-Catyakker are still catching some very nice Spring Carp. The bite has really slowed down due the spawn. Here are a few resent catches from the Guadalupe River and the Cibolo Creek.

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Rick on his pending Cibolo Creek Record Common Carp. The fish was 31.5" Long with a 20" Girth. The certified weight of the fish was 14.60 Lbs. Paper work completed and will be sent to the Texas Parks&Wildlife for their review! Catching some "SUPER FISH" with friends. It just don't get any better! fish

Thanks all. We have been after a record Carp on Cibolo Creek for nearly a month with nada. Very frustrating as we could see them working but no takers. Maybe they will start to to get more in a feeding mood now....or maybe not. I recon that is why they call it fishing instead of harvesting. rolleyes

I always find trying out a few different baits can produce bites. I bring at least 3 types of bait with me every time I head out, and always take a look on the bank for anything I could thread onto my hair rig. It's crazy, sometimes I'll have fished corn for an hour or two with no bites, then I'll give in and put some bread or berries on the hook and get a bite within 5 minutes.

Always GREAT TIMES fishing with Clayton and Rick. A lot of GREAT memories have been made with a lot more to follow. Rick we all worked hard at several spots on the Cibolo for a couple of months trying to break that record. Glad you got it. It was awesome seeing that hook set on that run! hooked It was also one "SUPER" fight! boxing

TXMulti-Species: We had three types of baits that we were using. It was the cornflakes that did the trick. We chumed the area with regular can corn. Kept it pretty simple! Great times on the creek for sure. thumb

Thanks Pot licker and J-Moe. J-Moe, I would have used my fly rod on that Carp except the water was too deep to wade and the bank was thick with trees. blush

Re: Still Catching some nice Carp! Including Pending Cibolo Creek Record ! - 06/06/18 05:32 PM

Thanks Laker for the Kudos. I just use cheep Corn Flakes. Crush them up in my hand, add a little water and form a fist size dough ball. I then pinch off enough to form a smaller ball around the hook and that's it. I have used Big Red instead of water like many do but haven't noticed enough difference to warrant taking a can of pop with me. I also found I must make the dough ball as needed as it will dry out, making it more like a rubber ball too hard to set the hook. We normally chum the area by throwing out some can corn to hopefully draw them into the area. wink

Thanks Curtis for the reply! Rick aka Catyakker could catch a Carp on a bare hook. I have learned a lot form both him and Clayton aka Wildman of Navidad! To super anglers to fish with! thumb

Looking at the past post both here and in the Bluegill section I can see your point on both Catyakker and the Wildman of the Navidad!

Congratulations Catyakker on your record carp! Nice fish. Chuck (BAF): You guys are having a great Carp year! How do you adapt from catching small sunfish using ultralight tackle to giant fish like carp?

Thanks Gitter.
"How do you adapt from catching small sunfish using ultralight tackle to giant fish like carp?"

Ah, the love of just fishing. I really like Ultra Light for both spinning and fly fishing. But, when it comes to targeting fish like Carp over 10 lbs, I kind of like uploading my tackle to medium action rods with at least 10 lb line. Of course, I've been known to trot line, limb line, jug line; and even noodling big Flathead Cats in my younger dumber days up in Oklahoma. loco

The best Carp gear I have are two Shakespeare Spinning Reels with 12 Lb. Test line on two Shakespeare rods, 6 and 7 feet long. Small size 6 Eagle Claw Hooks baited with doe bait or corn. Usually use a sliding weight with a leader. I also chum with a can of plane corn. thumb

I figured your carp gear was a minimal considering what you target! Again you guys catch some very nice fish.
