B-52 getting air refueled - 07/05/16 10:15 AM

Had the opportunity to go up with the Missisippi Air National Guard today on their KC-135 to see them refuel one of our B-52s. Pretty cool thing to watch from their perspective.

That never ceases to amaze me. Dad was a crew chief on B-47's many moons ago.

Thanks for your service and what a cool pic!

I've been on both ends of that refueling. It's gets scary on the B-52 end when the boom comes about 2 feet over the hatch windows. I'd sit in the IP seat between the pilots so it went right over my head. My seat cushion would have a bump in it afterwards. It's amazing that those two huge planes can fly so close together. Thanks for the pictures. Brings back memories.

I trained pilots to do that...both ways.

First attempts were often exciting. Some, more than exciting.

That is what I worked on the first five years of my service. Stationed at Barksdale AFB, 2nd Bomb Wing.
I worked on the navigation systems for KC-135 and B52-Gs, which by the way, is what that one in the photo is. Awesome photos...... For anyone that does not know. That airman running the fuel boom is laying on his stomach on what looks like a weight bench. He is looking out a little window. That is where those photos were taken.

14 years working ECM on BUFFs (G's and H's) at Fairchild AFB. Then traded in the camouflage to wear blues as a computer programmer.
Still miss the old birds. Newest one out there is a lot older than her crew members.

That is a B-52H in the pictures. Look at the engines. All the G's are in the boneyard or gone. I was a G crew chief and FTD Instructor on G's for 7 years at Barksdale. Great plane.

I found nothing about it to be boring. In some cases, it was quite the opposite.

Awesome pictures....I like the view from the KC-10 better than the KC-135

Re: B-52 getting air refueled - 07/13/16 10:19 PM

Have observed from the cockpit of an AWACS both day and night and from the boomers perspective in a KC-135. Quite the work load for the AWACS pilots and since they receive so much fuel it can take a long, long time. Both pilots were sweating messes when it was all over.

Much preferred the view from an F-14 where we controlled the process (no boom required) and it didn't take all that long.
