If some "fish scientist" corrects me for calling it a PERCH....what would he call this fish?

Got it at the Brazos. Its red in color but the picture doesnt really show it for what it is. Its actually a very beautiful fish. I was glad to catch it for my Native Aquarium but would really like to know its real name.

This is an exceptionally gorgeous red-breasted sunfish, Lepomis auritus. Whomever corrected, it isn't a perch.

thank u very much. So does that mean its a longear sunfish? Dont mean to sound to dumb but I'm one of those that grew up calling everything a blue gil or perch.

You know, I think it's you that's correct. I believe it is a long-eared sunfish. Nobody should ever be criticized for being curious. I don't think anyone will make fun of you. Sunfish can be tricky!

so do the longear sunfish come in all diiferent colors? Someone told me it was a pumpkinseed sunfish but it has that big "longear" that has this bright white along the edge of it.

Definitly a dollar sunfish a very rare fish for texas nice catch!!! Could easily be mistaken for a longear but it is by science a different species.

ITS A PERCH, also known as Trotline Bait I was raised the same way everything was a perch. Then I was corrected as well by the armchair biologists.

Isn't Perch the Yankee version of Bream? Any fish bigger than a shad that you can't identify.

I have studied perch, brim or whatever you want to call them for years. Often they can hybridize buit this is a true red blodded dollar sunfish.

Looks like i need to research dollar sunfish. I have two of them in my aquarium.

It's a beautifully colored up male longear sunfish. A great addition to your native tank!

Their value is only in their beauty in your personal tank. It is illegal to sell native fish taken from public waters without a nongame collection permit.

Thank u. I love having a native aquarium. Its great when friends ask where I get my fish and I reply "the brazos" lol. Native fish are beautiful in a aquarium and fun to watch. Look how they stackup against the cover in the pic below. Everything is from the brazos in my setup. including the rock and drift wood.

They're worth eating...pretty good fried up!

They (longear) don't get very big but they're beautiful fish!!!

On the other hand, Green Sunfish can get HUGE!! We're talking up to 4lbs in the right conditions. They are mean little guys! I've seen one up to about 2lbs inhale a 9'' Zoom Lizard. No joke!
