wow, awesome picture! what kind of snakes are those? are the smaller ones cooperheads or "corn snakes"? i have had one that same color and pattern swim into the boat before and assumed it was a cooperhead because of how aggressive it was.

Re: Snakes - 03/20/12 05:35 PM

Looks like the big one is a rat snake and the others are copperheads. Step lightly! Wonder where that pick was taken.

Little ones look like corn snakes. Bigger one is a rat snake i would shoot them to be sure though

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 12:16 AM

Those are not corn snakes. 100% without a doubt those are copperheads. Pretty cool to find that many in one spot. I was so focused on the big rat snake I didn't see the copperheads at first.

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 12:39 AM

I don't think they are corn snakes.

def. copperheads. Only good snake is a dead one!

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 12:50 AM

I zoomed in as far as possible and I think they are copperheads, classic pit viper head!! Corn snakes would have the same shape head as that rat snake.

If anybody has a lot of old piles of tin on their property within an hour of Arlington, let me know. They will all be out of the tin in a week or two, but I will come take a look next spring.

Cool pic, I've always kinda had a thing for snakes, even had a python for a few years. I'm glad I don't have a bunch of dangerous ones around me, I'd hate to kill them.

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 03:05 AM

the big ones a chicken snake rat snake same thing , all the others are very pretty copperheads , the one on far left is just darker but still a copperhead

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 03:12 AM

I remember my father shooting one of those copperheads in our backyard in Arkansas when I was 11. It was so camouflaged w the leaves it took me a while to spot it.

Copperheads aren't dangerous. Worse than a bee sting, but nothing an anti-inflamatory and pain killer can't handle.

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 04:15 AM

think you could get them all with a single shotgun shot?

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 05:34 PM

The rat snake was probably gunna eat the copperheads.

Is the pain kiler for when they cut one of your limbs off?

definitely copperheads but I only counted 5 coppers and the 1 rat snake

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 06:44 PM

Yep, I only seem to see 6 snakes. As others have mentioned, one rat snake, the rest are 100% copperheads. I would have loved to find those. I want to take some photographs of some copperheads but haven't found any around my place in about 10 years.

There are 2 copperheads together just above the head of the rat snake. Looks like one though.

The other is to the left of 2 that are side by side. Darker color and can only see a little bit of it.

Re: Snakes - 03/21/12 07:23 PM

I now see the one on the far left that is nearly brown in color. The "Two" in the middle still look like one to me, but either way, quite an interesting find.

Due to what? The toxicity of copperhead venom is mild. Maybe a diabetic or someone with circulation problems would possibly suffer from necrosis, but even then amputation wouldn't be required.

I have a ton of respect for your snake knowledge, Pope1, but that is misleading, bad advice. Copperhead bites can cause significant side effects. Here is a gallery of images of a bite to the finger--> Clicky. Click on the right arrows to view the progression. This guy tells his story in the site's forum--he had side effects such as limited use of his hand for weeks. A copperhead bite should be taken seriously, even if they aren't as bad as a rattler, moccasin, etc.

Brandon, you are the man when it comes to snakes, but I beg to differ.
my bite caused 36 hrs of the worst pain I have EVER felt (leg on fire kinda pain)
You're right, no need for AV, White count never got high enough, BUT, I was crutches for 3 weeks, & lost 50% of the actual mass of calf muscle to atrophy. took months to get right. bit on the interior L. achilles. I've got some real cool pics, LoL!!!
It's all about the bite.. kind of a [censored] shoot.

Posted By: Pope1

Re: Snakes - 03/22/12 02:15 AM

Sounds like a bad one. I am sorry it was so painful. A tendon is a bad spot to get bitten due to lack of vascular tissue. Did you step in it?
Shoot over the pics.

Anyone wanting copperheads come on by! I usually find 5-10/yr on my property, be it in a bush, in the flower beds, under leaves, on the front walkway or on the porch. My dog just loves them.

Re: Snakes - 03/23/12 11:00 PM

hey pope the owner of frisco stone would disagree with you,he picked up a flat of flowers and was bitten on the finger by a baby copperhead in coppel.. by the time the ambulance got to him they imediately called careflight..he almost died that day but recovered 100 %...on the other hand i worked with a guy that got bit by a copperhead walking to his truck to go to work...he came into work and worked the whole day..we would come in his office every hour to see his ankle swelling up.. he took the weekend off and he was 68yr old

Re: Snakes - 03/23/12 11:12 PM

you guys will have to excuse my copperhead ignorance but are they found only near water or anywhere? Being in Calif we dont have them.

I know if I pulled that tin back and found that the tin would be full of holes and dead snakes........I would be on my way to Lowes to buy a new piece!
