i believe Evinrude ... is 2 stroke. if so. there's no match for 4 stroke with same hp.~

Now lets play, SHO vs E Tech

i second SHO versus E tech

E-Tec makes a HO engine too. 2 stroke motors will always out perfom 4 strokes of the same hp because of the inherent characteristics of each motor, but comparing the two is really apples and oranges. Its like comparing a diesel pickup to a gas pickup, both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Sorry catfish your wrong on that one. The sho outpermorms the hpdi in every aspect. Its faster, lighter, and drinks way way less gas and oil. No offense to you bud just clarifying.

The SHO is way better than those older yami 4strokes.

Sho is way better than any yammy ever made.

2 strokes will always out perform 4 strokes.

I guess I don't quite understand. All I need my outboard to do is to crank more times than not and get me on and off the lake at a decent rate. I don't need it to pull boats underwater or see how fast I can go from one hole to the next.

The 4 stroke is as quiet as my troll motor. Nice!

Well the way things look in the future the 2-stroke is going to be phased out and 4-strokes are our future engines. I don't mind the loss in power if it means I can get more fuel economy and the engine is RELIABLE. My dad and I had a Merc Verado 225 for a while on a 24 foot bay boat and we hated it. It would never run right and would stay in the shop more than in the water. It would go into safe mode and only run at idle way too much. Safe mode to Mercury is DANGER mode for saltwater when your in 4-6 foot seas!!

We finally told the dealer to replace it with a 2-stroke and give us the credit for store items and service. Funny thing is we had almsot $6000 in store credit from the swap and we got to fish all we wanted with that 2-stroke and no issues!!

I will say the 2-stroke is a dirty engine but man do they run like bat out of heck...But that SHO engine has really gotten it right if they just tweek it a little bit more and make it a bit more affordable and reliable engine. Im keeping my eye on that technology for my future needs.

IMO- A supercharged engine is too risky for outboards. Too much engineering to go wrong on the water.

Do you know know what SHO and HO mean in regard to hp rating ICOMIA standards? If you did than there is no way that you can say that one will out perform another. No four stroke will ever outperform the same hp two stroke. Its just the way it is. I dont have anything against four strokes, nor do I have something for two strokes. They each have their places. Like I said, its a diesel vs gas pickup thing.

Pretty soon the 2 stroke's place will be the junkyard. The way the epa is pushing things I can see a day with no 2 strokes on the water, in my lifetime.

Its already hppening. Its illegal to sell a 2-stroke in California. Don't know about owning one there, but I was reading that some lakes out there have banned the use of two strokes on them.

So what? I'm never going to live in LALA land. Right now, the EPA has no enforcement in this arena. And in case you guys haven't been paying attention, the DI 2 strokes get about the same mileage and low emissions as the 4 strokes.

You guys that keep repeating the ad copy for the SHO should check your facts. They ain't lighter than a good 2stroke, and they won't be without using incredibly expensive materials and tech. The SHO is a 4.2 liter engine. The Merc 250XS is a 3 liter engine. The SHO has about 5 times as many moving parts. As long as they are assembled by people, I won't buy one.

In case you havent noticed, as Calipornia goes, so goes the rest of the country. Look at all the emissions on cars. Get used to it. Neither one of us like it, but is just seems to be the way its going to be. Eco-Nazis are taking over or have taken over the car industry and now the marine industry.

Well, that was true 10 years ago, but the rest of the country is starting to see what a disaster some of their policies are. We don't HAVE to follow them. They have proven how stupid they are year after year.

I didn't mean my comments like you took them, either. But that's the wonder of the net. Sorry.

Looks dangerous. Why would that guy keep pulling that boat until the other guy fell out? That looks extremely dangerous to do to somebody.

Re: Evinrude vs. Yamaha... Now I know what motor im getting - 04/26/11 05:07 PM

I have ridden in a 225 HP 4 stroke Honda for several years now and for speed & weight the 2 strokes will outpreform it all day. Everything that can be done to the Honda to increase speed and power has been done by the owner but still about 60-62mph on a Ranger 521 is all it will do. If the 4 strokes would run with the 2 strokes and get better fuel mileage you would see a lot more on the pro circuit. Remember 4-stroke=1 power stroke for every 4 strokes. 2-stroke=1 power stroke every other stroke. Most boat dealerships charge more per hour to work on a 4 stroke than a 2 stroke, ever wonder why-maybe the complexity of the 4 stroke. Two great plus for the 4 strokes over most 2 strokes is fuel mileage and quietness. One big negative is additional initial cost over the 2 stroke.
