Does hook type and size make a difference on a Crappie jig?

Does hook type and size make a difference on a Crappie jig? - 10/06/16 05:48 PM

I pretty much have stocked up on many different size jig heads, most all with #2 sickle hook and those are usually red hooks. I seem to like that size and color best. Now I am rethinking the size hook. I see a lot of crappie guys like to use a #4 bronze sickle hook. I am trying to assemble an order for the Mad Crappie jigs, and I need help in deciding if I should order some of the watermelon eyes, in both #2 and #4 or just stay with the #2. All input appreciated.

+1 - and a pink head! lol

Lots of folks prefer #2, but I like 4's.

+2 on the pink heads with #4 red hooks! I like the red hooks because they bend easily when hung up so you're more likely yo get your jig back! I normally get my jig heads with out the keeper due to em ripping up your baits! A dab of super glue will do the trick thumb

I typically use a #4 with 2inch baits up to about 2.5in. For anything larger, I'll use a #2 or #1 hook. Typically those are with 1/8 or 1/4oz heads.

Use 1/16 oz w/ #4 black chrome sickle hook on just about everything. Fish mostly in 8' to 10' water. Will use 1/8 oz when fishing over 20' deep.

when y'all speak of getting your bait back when hung up, are using braid or mono, i break a lot of mono when hung.

I took Ernest Paty's advise and I use a 2 oz weight and a paper clip, hook the weight to the paper clip, then hook the paper clip to the line (I work the paper clip to the center of the clip for the line) and let it go. Then I let it sink below the snag and so far it has gotten the hook off the snag. Now I do not know if this works for a double hook/jig setup as I have been using only a single jig setup

I started using jigheads with the plastic brushguards. Just trim the guard above the hook slighty. I might miss some of the smaller fish.

10 LB P-Line high vis green and 1/4 oz with 1/0 black nickel Matzuo sickle hook for me. Not all sickle hooks are the same, make sure they are Matzuo as they are the sharpest out there. I have tried the Eagle claw sickles and they are not sharp to me but I'm sure they still work fine for others. A sickle hook will almost always hook a fish in the roof of the mouth and not in the lip so I don't worry about losing fish at the boat.
