Tim - if it has gills and lives in the water the poor thing doesn't have a chance of not getting caught by you.

Now, would it hurt to smile for the picture? scared

Nice fish. Did it do a lot of tail walking?

Thanks! Oh yeah. It is really amazing to see a fish that big jumping and tail walking.
I also caught a smaller (25-28 lbs) that jumped a lot more.
Too much fun.

As far as smiling, the guide taking the pict wanted to get the tarpon back in the water. So, that was all I got. cool And no weight. frown he's an easy 30, so I just said 30+. maybe closer to 40+.

Tarpon that size are great fun, When you hook a big one , it can start to resemble work.
When the Permit are spawning on the wrecks and rocks , they are pretty easy to hook up.
They make blistering runs, super fun to catch and don't wear you down like Tarpon.
Permit on the flats is a whole different ball game, I have only tried a few times,
seen them , never got close enough to even make a cast.

Good luck

Yes, work, but fun work! lol You have to pay attention. cool It took about half my spool.
Hanging on for dear life. It took about 30 minutes and right through a rain storm. I'm soaking wet in the pict. grin

You probably know that Tarpon have a nickname of "Silver Kings". I also learned that there is a technique when you are fighting them - when they jump (which is a lot), you have to be ready and "bow to the king", lean forward and point your rod at them... or they will break your line or throw the hook with their head shakes.
Good times!

I used KWPG - Key West Pro Guides and Captain Ryan Carter. They run out of Hurricane Hole just over the Cow Key bridge. Great, well run organization. Tons of experience. They talked with me a lot to find out what I wanted to do and then tailored the trip to me. It was great. I will be back.

How about you?

Re: Bucket List - 08/31/16 05:28 PM

I have been going to the Keys since the mid 80's. The last several trips have been with
sieze the day charters , http://fishinkeywest.com/ , Captain Paul D'Antoni sold the
business after my trip last year , but I have met the new owner and will probably fish
with him next year.
I like their style of fishing and have caught as many as 14 species in a day. I love the fact that you can catch such quality fish 10 minutes from the dock.

Yep, super nice.
We were less than 5 minutes out also.
Nice one!

We were going for bonefish after the Tarpon, but the storms kept us from going where we wanted.
After every storm it was h-u-m-I-d! ugh
