Night fishing near Bridge Pilings - 06/10/16 02:01 PM

I am going to hit the local lake and do some night fishing around the bridge pilings. What rig/presentation do y'all recommend? I haven't done this before.

I will be in a kayak and have some lights. Use the lights?

Please drop some knowledge on me.

Either a single or double rig for minnows is always good. I use the Eagle Claw double hook rigs witht he wire holding the hooks out and they catch crappie well. You can also go with one hook with a weight at the end to get it down. Or you can just fish with jigs or jigs tipped with minnows. All work well. I find that if the baitfish show up under my lights that the crappie will soon follow. If they hit minnows then I know they are there and I drop jigs of differnet colors and types to see what they want. Works well for me. Only use the minnows to locate them.
Fish next to the pilings (within 3 feet) and use a slip bobber. Set it to a certain depth like 10' and move the bobber slider up or down as the bite dictates when you find them.
Green lights work best but white works fine. If bait does not show or you get no bite with in 30-45 minutes I would move to another piling closer to bank or a change from where you first try. They will be there. Just got to find them.

tie up to pilings that are next to the channel that runs under the bridge.. the deeper side if there is one.
also pay attention to where the little birds are pooping that make thier little mud houses under the bridges.
set a few poles, tightlined at different depths. use double hook righs with minnows.
be patient.. fish travel the channels at night looking for schools of shad that are moving shallow to feed. the fish can come thru in waves, or they may comes thru one time, bite like crazy, then its all over.
usually though right at dusk you will get some action.. get set up before its dark, dont be farting around in the dark trying to get set up.

When night fishing bridge pilings use hi-vis line and become a line watcher. Many times your rod tip will not move but you will see your line move to the side. I almost always use minnows when fishing at night. Bring a cast net because you can always catch glass minnows under your lights.

New on here but wanted to share my new find , after looking for a bright portable light, Although a bit on the pricey side. I saw this company at the Houston fishing show , this guy was actually throwing this light on the floor and had a picture of them running it over with a truck and it still worked and looked brand new. Instead of using the LED tape lights they embed high powered led 3 watts each , this thing is brighter than my Underwater Dock light . at a reported 14,000 lumens . I am extremely happy with this a wanted to share it with the group. It is hard to find a good underwater light that is small and bright , most are too bulky for me . We are going to trying some nigh fishing at the S . Jetty’s in Galveston , if anyone know of a better night fishing spot I welcome your help.
