Where do you clean your catch?

Where do you clean your catch? - 05/21/16 10:07 PM

I usually clean the fish in my kitchen and put the guts in Walmart bags doubled and put in trash can. Looking for a better disposal method. The Walmart bags are real thin. I hear some people bury it in the garden also. Thanks for any ideas.

Outside on the tailgate usually. Freeze the guts and drop it in the trash can on trash day.

This is the only place I've heard of people cleaning fish inside their home... I've got a stainless table to clean fish on... 2 saw horses and a sheet of stainless works good. I dump the guts in the woods or bury them in the garden.

I clean them on a cooler on my patio. The plants where the blood and scales get washed into get huge. I bury the fish either in the garden or in my compost pile when the garden gets going.

Re: Where do you clean your catch? - 05/22/16 03:29 AM

I've always cleaned on a table outside the garage and double bagged them. I've also dumped the guts in one of our community ponds to feed the catfish but don't do that as much as people unfamiliar might think I'm dumping garbage or worse. So I may start trying the freeze and toss method if I get out to fish anytime soon!

Clean them in the kitchen. Put remains in bags in the freezer and wait until trash day to throw out. It's always fun when there is no room. Hunting season is the best. lol

If I'm at the state park then I'll clean them at their cleaning station. If not, I do it right here at the house and carry the guts to the back of the pasture to feed the buzzards.

Clean everything at home . I keep post-hole diggers handy to bury the remains in the flower / veggie gardens ( give my dogs the caviar and livers ) .

Re: Where do you clean your catch? - 05/22/16 02:12 PM

Fish cleaning station or on my tailgate. I have a large piece of counter top that stays in the back of my truck to be used as a cutting board. I have a dumpster around the corner that I have permission to dump remains in when I clean them at the house. I used to clean them on my bait board on the boat until I found out that was illegal. They must be cleaned on the bank.

If I'm fishing my local lakes, I clean them at home, throw the heads in a bucket and either dump it in the pasture or till it into the garden. If I'm at a lake away from home, or not going home that day, I clean them at the lake after I pull my boat out. The lakes I fish away from home have cleaning stations and the heads just get thrown into the water off the dock.

I use a camp table with my XL cutting board. I put a trash can in a 5 gal bucket and fill another 5 gal bucket about half full with ice water. Guts go in the bag trimmed fillets go in the ice water. Then I rinse them one more time before freezing them in water.

At our slip. Wife bought me a portable cleaning station fro X Mas last year that has the sink and water hook up built in to it. Since our slip has water and electric I also use a electric fillet knife. Throw the remains off the slip for catfish. Bag them up and take them straight to the freezer.

The last picture looks kinda like the slips out at Lavon. I cut a 2x8 to fit in the railings and it slips in and out and with a quick wash, it goes back in the boat. It is an easy/cheap solution. I cut the fish on the dock almost every time.

I use a folding table I build based on a youtube video I found. The top is cutting board material. It works great.

Here is the original youtube video that explains how to make it.

Sometimes at the lake/river, sometimes at home. I'm going to build a portable fish cleaning station somehow. The main thing in my eyes, is not having to bend over the whole time that you're cleaning fish. That sucks.

Best Fertilizer money can by, feed the cats, then feed the garden.

I have a table setup for outside, but now I have a deep sink in the garage, bucket with bag for guts. Freeze them and throw them away as others have said. If I take my fish inside to clean my wife may gut me. frown

Clean them in my driveway and dump remains in pasture behind house or in creek on the way out of the neighborhood. Creeks runs through a pasture to a big pond. Mudbugs take care of remains over night. Buzzards and coyotes clean up the ones in the pasture.

Re: Where do you clean your catch? - 05/25/16 09:17 PM

I clean them in my kitchen. Sure is nice to get out of the heat.

Last summer, I made the mistake of dumping a limit of sandbass carcasses in my trash cans the day after trash day. Talk about stink. Since then, freezing the remains until trash day is a must.

I have a 18" x24" piece of red wood that I lay on the garage work bench(near the end),I have 2 nails driven in the end of the work bench that I stretch plastic bags over, and just rake the guts into them, when finished I just pull the sack off the nails, tie and freeze till trash day, wash board, knife and 5gal bucket with hose in the yard.

Re: Where do you clean your catch? - 05/26/16 04:47 PM

When I lived in town I'd take them to the creek at the golf course and feed the turtles. Now that I live out of town I have tow ponds on my place and still feed the turtles.

When in town and people would see me dumping a 5 gal bucket of stuff in the creek I got some looks and was approached by a few concerned. Once I explained what I was doing all was good.

Back in the 80'S, I would clean at my apartment and then put the guts in a paper bag and deposit in the trash can at the front door of the 7/11 on the corner. They had a really rude staff. Probable shouldn't have gone to their level.
Now, I clean on the truck tailgate and return the carcasses to the lake. Clean a lot of cats at times and end up with a lot of mass to dispose of.

I never know where I will be cleaning.

Put some brown paper bags inside 4-6 plastic bags and you won't have rips or punctures. Paper bags hold the plastic open also.

My wife just looked at this post. She said keep getting rid of them where you have been. I clean fish at home an then double plastic bag them and go a gas station and get some gas and throw them out.

Depends on how my shop guy has been treating me. If I have to stay late to close the shop on Friday, he gets to smell the rotting fish in the dumpster the whole next week.

I like the ironing board idea. Have an old one I was about to haul to Goodwill, think I'll convert it. Currently using a cutting board on a wooden patio table.

I like it because you can adjust the height. If my back is bothering me, I can lower it, sit down, and filet away!

I clean them right here. Then take the guts and throw them in the backyard and watch the family of foxes have a snack!
