Limestone gave up a few

Limestone gave up a few - 05/10/16 01:15 PM

Work and kids activities have limited my time on the water here lately but I was able to get out this past Friday and do a little fishing. I wasn't necessarily trying to fill the boat, just trying to find out where the fish were and weren't, and try that dock shooting thingy out. Don't shun me but I did pick up a few dozen minnows just in case the jigs weren't workin' for me.
I hit the water early around 7, tried some standing timber in about 18' fow, each stump produced at least 1 good keeper and several juveniles. didn't stay long at any particular one, 10 minutes at most, covering lots of different areas of the lake. I fished natural structure until about 9 a.m. before moving on to man made stuff. I started dock shooting about 9 and tried that for an hour and a half, took me a while to get coordinated enough to shoot, operate the trolling motor and work a jig all at the same time... man that's work. Took me a while to put it all together but I managed to catch a few, no keepers, I don't know if that means I haven't got the technique down yet or the good ones aren't there yet. Either way, it was pretty fun. Chart body and head seemed to work the best, although black/chart produced a few too.
About 11 I moved to some other man made structure in about 15' fow and caught tons of 9"- 10" fish and 4 or 5 11". Finished the day out by 12:30 with a limit all over 11" and my best of the day being 15.5" and 2.69 lbs caught off of timber, and 2 more 14.5" not far behind. It seemed the bigger fish came off of timber but the numbers came off of concrete. Coincidence? no clue, you experts tell me.
I cleaned 13 and did a little stocking in a couple of tanks behind the house (don't worry, the kids will have the lips jerked off of them soon)Of the fish I cleaned, all of the females still had eggs...some were full! Kinda late for that isn't it? All in all, amazing day on the water, and its hard to beat fried crappie on a Friday evening.

Almost lost my boat on Limestone when it was new. Lost the lower unit and wind blew me on rocks. It was ugly.

That's a good day on Stone. Congrats!
Don't listen to Darrell about the jigs. Some of us are diehard about the jigs (me included), but truth be told you need minnows to have a really good day on Stone. That 1-2 good fish per tree pattern you found is pretty typical too. Now thru the end of June is the best time on that lake. You should be able to pull off a few more good days like that.

It's funny, I've always preferred minnows to jigs except in the winter patterns, but I'm slowly crossing over to the darkside. Simply put, I hate having to wait for a store to open for minnows, or the hassle of that dang bucket always being in the way, whatever, I'm getting to where I enjoy the jigs more and more.
