Crappie Bite in West Texas Lakes

Crappie Bite in West Texas Lakes - 02/22/16 05:01 PM

Guys, the crappie are biting until the next cold front drives them deep.

Lake Cisco seems to be the hottest lake with limits coming from dock fishing. 12-15 feet of water and minnows appear to be much better than jigs at this time.

Lake Ft. Phantom is very much a hit and miss situation. A few starting to show up in 15 feet of water.

Lake Stamford is very poor on keeper crappie. A few crappie are being caught, but most are under the length limit.

Hubbard Creek is fair to good out from the dam.

Lake Levels are decent in most lakes:
Miller Creek is still over the spillway.
Ft. Phantom is .5 feet low.
Lake Cisco is full.
Hubbard Creek is 13.5 feet low.

If you have a local lake report throw it in here if you like. Cold fronts and cold rain will drive the crappie deep again when and if they happen, but they are trying to start. Nothing super shallow that I am aware of.

Good Fishing,

Got a report off of a buddy who fished Phantom today. Had 7 or 8 good ones, in 18 ft. Don't know where, how, etc.

I've been to Stamford probably 5 times since Christmas and haven't caught one crappie, granted most of my fishing was from the dock at the anchor or at the bridge. Took the boat out one time but caught nothing. Guess the golden algae took a toll on them. What fish survived are spread out. I have been to Miller creek with some success. Fished last Thursday morning at the dock and caught five crappie, four of which were keepers, all full of eggs. Only caught them biting right at sunrise but not before or after. I may have caught them as they were moving back out to deeper water after a night of shallow feeding, but that's just a guess. Caught them all about 9-10ft down in about 12 fow. Also tried my kayak back at the bridge but the wind was gusting 30mph so i could hold position very well. Should be able to catch decent fish at Miller this spring. I don't think the drought hit them near as hard as Stamford.
