I have been catching quite a few crappie from a private lake I fish.
The water is crystal clear. Designed by Bill Dance. Lots of bottom structure with varied depths up to 30 ft.
All of the crappie I have been catching are in 17 ft of water suspended 12 to 13 ft deep.
Started catching them on hair jigs, and now plastic.
Last two time I have been have not been so good. The fish are still there. I have tried every color in the rainbow with now results. I can see my jig in front of their nose on my helix. while they are feeding on shad. I was catching them casting and vertical jigging as well as dead sticking. Now nothing works. Surface temp is 51 degrees.
Should I try minnows? I am sure these 30 degree nights and high pressure have a lot to do with it.
What would you do? Would be happy to take someone with me. I am a good fisherman but all input is welcome!

Re: Crappie Question - 01/05/16 08:29 PM
The weather is possibly a factor but with clear water I am thinking they just being finicky!! I would also try size of jig as well as plastics and tied!! A slight difference in profile I have noticed can be a big difference as can presentation ie still or deadsticking as some say or slight or fast movement!!
So in other words you probably have it right I will always blame the weather when fishing is bad...lol...If ya want some company let me know I'd be happy to help!!

The bite has just slowed down in general for a lot of people including me. I'm sure the water getting colder has a lot to do with it considering how warm of a winter it has been. It should pick up come next month.

I ran into the exact same thing on a small pond once. A guy told me to use a small road runner head with a bright jig (orange and chartreuse). Cast it out and reel it in really really slow. It worked for me, and I think it would be worth giving it a try.

In clear water the best thing is use jig the same color as what that are feeding on. And in cold water the best way to fish a jig is try to hole it without moving at all. I would try to hole it still about 8-16 inch's above the fish.
What question would you have come up with Huckleberry? Or answer?
Thanks guys, I appreciate all of your info. I think they will see a minnow next since I have matched the jig to the bait and deadsticked for hours

The fish could also just not be feeding. They don't have to eat as much now as they would during the warmer months.
Thanks Darrell, I have been fishing since I was two and that was 66 years ago. I do know a thing or two about it.
But always willing to learn more. Will give you a buzz tomorrow!
