Best PVC brush piles?

Posted By: Kylefield

Best PVC brush piles? - 12/10/15 12:51 AM

I have many cedar brush piles but now want to make some PVC piles. Can anybody provide any suggestions on the best way to build them and maybe include some pictures. Any insight would be appreciated.

Don't let the Game Warden catch you setting them out!

There really aren't any 'rules' in the shape of a PVC condo. Ernest and I have built LOTS of them and no two are alike. You put something down there and if you placed it in the right location...they'll come.

I usually put one 6-7' trunk vertically (3" pvc) with two 1.5" lengths running at a 45 angle and fill the bucket with 40lbs of concrete. I also add some 1.5" pieces (4 or 5) that stick just above the top of the bucket. All these that are in concrete, I drill a 1" hole on the end so the concrete can fill and get a hold on the pipe. Then I put 3/4" or 1/2" PEX in 5' lengths on the vertical pieces to make branches and then rough sand all the pieces. Then I stick cedar or bamboo in the short tubes and anchor with a couple of screws and wire. This way I can build a bunch at one time and add the foliage when I want to put a few out.

Here are ones with Cedar.

Here are ones with Bamboo.

If it is a Corp. of Engineer lake, you could get a ticket for dumping them in the water. I tend to wake about 2:00 in the morning so I have never verified if the Corp frowns at this activity. wink

Here is a tip as well - If you have any new homes being built in your area, drive through frequently and you can find all the materials needed to build them. I've got a few spots that would throw all the pvc scraps in a box for me so I didn't have to dig in the piles. I've gotten good at just looking at the progress of the build and being able to tell if there would be scraps or not that I could use.

This link shows you step-by-step how to make a PVC crappie condo. Well, it's how we made ours, anyway. Hope it helps.

Just a side note on PVC , make sure you sand them 1st so the algae will grow on them faster. I have both PVC and bamboo condos in my slip. No comparison. The bamboo kicks the PVC's butt.

Don't let the Game-Warden catch you! Check with your local officer, it's a NO-NO! They work really well, that I have heard........

To say we have built several would be a vast understatement. Here are just a few of ours. All work, some better than others.
