Plastic Jigs or Hand Tied

Plastic Jigs or Hand Tied - 10/26/15 04:18 AM

Is there much difference in fishing with plastic jigs vs. hand tied jigs? For those of you who buy hand tied jigs from someone else, is the choice between hand tied and plastic ones just a personal preference or something else? For those of you who tie your own jigs, is the attraction to the hand tied jigs that because you are getting to catch fish with a jig that you personally made or is it something else? I use plastic and have never tried a hand tied one.

There is nothing like catching fish on something that you made yourself. I prefer hand ties for one main reason. If you miss a bite, you never have to wonder if your minnow is gone or your plastic is not straight. You simply fish until you break the lure off and then add another one.

For me hand ties are all about the action of the the bait. I fished the cheap tube jigs and panfish assassins for years until I fished some hand ties a guy at the Harbor Bay barge gave me. The tail of feather and hair flows in the water, the slightest movement makes the tail quiver... And like stated before, no adjusting, no bit off tails, and if you like scent, scent is hard as heck to get out of a hand ties... Making your own baits plastic or hand tied will cost $$$$, it's cheaper to buy them from one of the many guys around that sell them or take the plunge and get into tying...

Oh.... I can hook you up with some samples of my jigs if you would like....

I prefer hand ties, but plastics tend have more color selections. I use both.

I use plastics all the time because I usually am fishing down in bamboo tops with weedless Jigheads.

I've approached some of the guys on here about tying some of my Jigheads but it would be pretty difficult with the weed guard.

I have been using the 1&3/4" Slab Bandits the last few weeks and the Crappie seem to Love them. I know I Love not breaking off & having to retie !

I just started this Crappie fishing thang, however I have tried both and I will say both work. It seemed like the hand tied smaller jigs got me more bites during the slow time when my plastics were not producing. However I did notice that I got a lot of small small fish with the hand tied. I would like to try bigger hand tied jigs to see how they do and I am hoping to find some soon.

For me personally (key word here is personally) , I prefer hand tied when the water is cold. I tend to fish plastics from the spawn through November. I can send you a sample or two if you PM me your address....I have couple of spare ones lying around here somewhere smile

I use about six different brands of plastics (multiple colors in each brand). I like the idea of being able to make your own jigs and then catch fish with something that I personally made. I do however like the plastics as well. I definitely understand the issue of the plastics not lasting as long as a hand tied jig would (twisting, broken, torn, etc.). It's just that I have confidence in the jigs that I currently use and honestly, I have too many jigs (if that is possible) as it is. I was just curious to the reasons why so many people like them (hand tied) and are tying their own. Txmedic033 and SlabbedSilly, I appreciate the offer to send me a few of your hand tied jigs! I have a couple already but just have never used them. I think that I will try them the next time that I'm out fishing! Again, thank you both very much for the offer!

Plastics are my choice. Nothing a little super glue can't fix when your jigs are being hit a bunch. I've tied my own and it's a great feeling catching fish on your own product. But not enough for me to leave the plastics alone.

I use both, but small hand ties in the winter are my go to bait, 1/48 mean minner head from crazy angler, paint head green, chart body and red tail feathers, a tiny split shot about 18" above it to get it down to the depth quicker but the jig moves in the current.
