New to crappie fishing... - 07/28/15 11:19 PM

Hey fellas. I linger on this site alot look g for new info and good tips. I learn alot from yall. I do lots of catfishing and I'm looking to get into something new. Gonna pic up some new rods an reels. Anyways, I was looking for tips on jigs and locating structures that I should be fishing. I mostly fish lake waco, bosque, and brazos area. I do have a kayak so I can access most locations. I'm thinking I'm gonna start at 185 bridge pillers and wood piles. Start from the bottom and work my way up until something bites. Tips and locations would be much appreciated. Thanks

I'm in the area, but don't ask me. I seem to have forgot how to fish. Didn't get a bite last time out. blush

I like to start shallow and get deeper. The more aggressive fish seem to hang higher in the water column. It's hard to beat any jig with chartreuse on it. Lots of fine jig makers here. I use Slab Bandits.

With plastic jigs the big thing is getting the jig on the hook as it was made for. Must be put on so the jig has full movement to do its thing. I only use collar type hooks and if the jigs don't hole up to it I get my jigs some where else next time. These are the best jigs out there better than live bait or hand tie's if they are fished right. Luck

I like Thermocline Lures, Constant Pursuit, and Slab Bandits when I fish plastics. Depends how I plan on fishing as to which bait I use.

Leave the hooked exposed like in this picture.

From I kayak, I would guess it would be best to start fishing the bridges until you get electronics (assuming you don't) to be able to help find the brushpiles.

Welcome aboard. I got my first fresh TOW (Time On Water) from a kayak. Google Earth is your best asset. Learn the patterns then find areas on Google Earth that correspond with the patterns. It's really that simple. Planning is the key to a succesful trip and safe one in a kayak.Tight lines!

Tons of great info and useful tips. I'll be getting my gear friday and hitting the water early Saturday morning. I use Google maps alot to find the best locations. That's How I read the river before I go out. Gives me an idea where the deep holes are and how the river cuts the banks. As for depth finding I drop a weight over the side to get a depth estimate. I've been out on the north bosque when the water was very low. so I remember where alot of brush piles and "good snag areas" are lol. Gonna try an be on the water by aunrise. I will update later this weekend of my experience and catch. I'll try and upload pics if I don't get to caught up in the fishing lol.
