Does anyone know of a place to buy minnows near Coffee Mill or Davy Crockett?

Take hwy 78 north out of Bonham from hwy 82. Just a short distance after you get on 78 you will turn right on FM 2611 like you are going out to Lake Bonham. Before you cross the first bridge there is an Exxon station on the left that sells minnows. You can actually take this same route to get to Coffee Mill and Crockett if you don't want to turn around and go back to 82.

Now you must pay me back with a fishing report! I'm planning on heading out that way soon. Good luck!

I will post a report if we do not get rained out. Thanks for the information.

Which direction are you coming from? This will determine the best way to get there. Outside of Bonham is the only place to buy minnows.

We went to Crockett this morning. The place is in sad shape, with signs of neglect everywhere. The lake is about 6 feet down as best as I can tell. The rest rooms are gone. The pier is sinking. The shoreline is grown up so there is no bank access to deep water.

I first went to Crockett fifty years ago. It had a thriving marina, well groomed shorelines and was bursting with bass, crappie and bluegill. It is sad to see what it has become. It is a real indictment of our national parks system.

We went on to Coffee Mill. It is just as bad. Since we were there we did fish for about 3 hours. We caught some nice Bluegill, but that was all.

Both lakes had a lot of boat traffic at the ramps. There were many turkey hunters in the surrounding woods.

Crockett was drained two years ago. Right now it is about 3' low. The dock is not sinking, it is coming up. The waters edge was about 15' in front of the dock last year. It is now floating.
Coffee Mill is full and flowing over the spillway. People really need to start picking up their trash.

Thanks for the clarification. I think the lake is more than 3 feet down based on what I remembered and looking at the old marina site, but it is certainly not full.

Coffee Mill is in better shape, but the Forest Service needs to get on the ball and do a lot of maintenance. It would help if people picked up after themselves, as you said, but a lot of the problem is just neglect.

Re: Coffee Mill and Crockett - 04/17/15 04:27 AM

I have been fishing the banks at both lakes for the last 2 solid months every day almost, morning around 10am and evening around 6:30pm till dark.
I have caught 1 female crappie with the beginning of an egg sack about a month ago in 3 feet of water. I have caught 3 bass that were about 2lbs each, and 1 2 pound drum. So, after fair deduction I can safely and honestly say, they ain't on the banks at crockett or coffee mill.

I'm very sad.

Fished a bass tournament there this weekend. I spoke with a couple of guys fishing from kayaks and they weren't tearing the crappie up either. However the bass were on the bank. There were more than 10 limits out of 19 teams. The big girls were not there but there were a lot of fish caught in the 2-4lbs range.
