When setting boo in concrete do you cut it off flush below the last node or do you run a dry wall
screw thru it like I do with pvc. thank's

I usually cut the bamboo off 6"s below a joint. Pour in 60lbs of sacrete (5 gallon bucket) & let it sit 3 days before moving.

If it's very windy I'll tie it off to a tree or chain link fence about 1/2 way up, so the cement will set up undisturbed.

Also will put a larger piece of bamboo in the center to pick it up and maneuver it with in the boat.

AS I get older, I'm beginning to feel the same way.

I use a 2 wheel dolly to move them around.

The worst part for me is mixing the sacrete. There just isn't an easy way & you want it kinda thick when it's mixed so not too much water.

I need to hire a High School kid!!!

My intention was to use an oil drainpan for a mold .about 16 inches byabout 3 inches
stay upright and weigh less. thati why i think i need to use a screw to anchor in the concrete
thanks for the info.

Probably would use a screw in that situation.

I'd try one in the lake, before you build a bunch. Make sure it will stay where you put it.

Bamboo is pretty buoyant.

spiderman
thanks for the info .I have found it best for me to put about 60 or 75 % dry mix in a tub ,put in a little too much water ,mix it sloppy and use the rest of the dry to stiffen it up

I put 30 to 40lbs of sackcrete in a 5gal bucket and mix it kinda of runny (my trick to mixing it is using two buckets so the bottom is easier to mix). On the 3" upright poles, I'll drill a hole near the bottom and then run a piece of pex that sticks out an inch or so from both sides as an anchor. I then add 1" or 1 1/2" tubes (5 or 6) that stick up a couple of inches above the bucket. I will drill two 1/2" holes near the bottom of these tubes so the concrete can grab them. I also add a 3' piece of 1" tube (with the holes near the bottom) to use as a handle. After all these tubes are set, I then add the other half of the concrete and let it dry. Then I add the pex arms.

Then I add all the bamboo in the tubes I previously put in the concrete and run a screw through the tube/boo. Beauty of this is you can add the bamboo much later (I have even done it while out on the boat but it is easier to do it on dry ground).

Now ready for the landfill. wink

Headed for the dump. wink

Reason for all the electrical tape was to hold the arms in place because I used the plastic sheathing from the tension cable used in new home slabs. When I use pex (like the blue arms), they are real tight fitting and don't need to be taped. All the white tape tags were removed before being set free (or were they stolen from my drive way??? I don't remember noidea )

BlueNitro and all

My only reasons for straying from the tried and true method are.
1 how hard is it to make them stand upright

2.what about some one dragging a crankbait on 60# braid thru it ,do tety tip or drag off

I am thinking a wider base may be more stable if I dont have to bring a forklift to set them
thank's again for the feedback.

Re: boo pile's ? - 09/02/14 06:40 PM

Out of the many that I have "sent to the dump" I have only one that did not stand up straight. It was on a fairly steep slope but I have caught many a good fish off it so I don't worry to much about them standing straight up. Here is a pic of it laying on it's side.

To answer your second question, I was once "disposing a set of three at the landfill" one early morning when a bunch of bass fishermen descended on me mid way through the deployment. Pretty sure the guy had seen what I was doing but later on ran a crankbait through them and got hung up. His partner cursed him knowing that I had just set them there and went in to get him un-hooked. I checked it once they left and it was in close to the same spot so I don't think they can move it very far before a hook straightens out.

My thought of a skinnier (but wider) base is I would be more worried about the concrete breaking up and the pile falling apart. I also like all the concrete being contained in the plastic bucket because I have a fiberglass boat and exposed concrete seems to like to rub all over it to prove a point. Just my 2 cents anyway.

Y'all are wasting energy if you are mixing the concrete before you pour it in. Just drill a couple of small holes in bottom of bucket, dump the sack in & fill it up with water, your not pouring a driveway, it doesn't need to be mixed, it will harden overnight.

Yes, mark them well and keep notes on depth of water, how they relate to the shore (in a line, bunched in three, etc.) and any other things that might help in finding them again.

You could also use a 2oz slab with the sharp part of the hook cut off and use it to feel for it.
