Spotlight up and running

Spotlight up and running - 04/16/14 10:37 AM

After completing the installation yesterday I made a real quick maiden voyage to ensure all was well with all systems and Houston, we have a go!
I think there is going to be a long learning period figuring out how this thing really works but, for starters, I'm liking what I see.
This brushpile is just outside the dock I'm using currently, maybe 100' or so from Tx Wizzards place. When I saw the fish, I just had to drop a jig and sure enough 'kaboom' but, it was a pretty good size sandie and not a big crappie.
Anyway, just thought I'd show everyone what this new Lowrance feature looks like from a novices point of view.

Damn You!!! Now I want one.

Be interested to know how effective it will be to help you find crappie.

Is it hooked up to a HDS-? Touch on your TM?

Yes, it is made for trolling motor mounting only. And it has to be a cable steer trolling motor (no electric steer) to work. As you turn your tm, the 'v' turns with it showing where you have your tm pointed. And yes, it is connected to my 9 Touch.

Yeah, Todd, next thing I'll add is total auto where I sit in on my deck and remote control everything from there. Don't even have to get in the boat or even clean fish, just let my wife do the cooking and enjoy!
Now if I could just find someone to clean the boat and gas it up, I'd be good to go.

Re: Spotlight up and running - 04/21/14 02:54 PM

Another shot of the spotlight taken yesterday. This shows a nice concentration of crappie. How do I know it's crappie? Cause my son and I boated a bunch of them!
I'm still not real happy about spotlight. The fact it will not scan without rotating the tm is a real bummer and almost prevents it from being of any value.
For example: Navigating to a saved waypoint. The ideal would be to stop the main engine away from the waypoint. Move to the bow and navigate to the waypoint, stop when you are close but, not on the brushpile/structure/whatever you have marked. Fish it without ever moving over it.
You can't navigate to the structure with spotlight since you have to continually rotate the tm to get the picture. So you end up wandering from side to side and so far, I can't judge where I'm going to end up.
The other issue is that it is difficult to determine distance. I can relate the distance in the water column by looking at the DI alongside the spotlight. But, items outside the water column I have no clue.
Anyway, here it is:

Honest report, that's what it's all about Bob.

Re: Spotlight up and running - 04/21/14 03:53 PM

cant you get a seperate bracket like from an old trolling motor, and deploy it seperately facing the direction you want. So you could steer the trolling motor independently of the spotlight transducer. you could put the spotlight transducer on a hand operated old trolling motor set up. just unscrew the motor off the old unit and make a bracket.

Re: Spotlight up and running - 04/21/14 03:55 PM

either that or tie it onto old jigums foot, anf let him sit upfront.

Love your toys!

Could you make a mount for it using pvc pipe? Then rotate the pipe to get your views.

Re: Spotlight up and running - 04/21/14 05:01 PM

Actually, found a mount on TFF that would work for $60 but, you'd still have to rotate it by hand. Before I buy one, I'm going to keep getting used to it the way it came.
