Help catching crappie in the Fort Worth area? - 02/14/11 03:56 PM

New to the area from Colorado. Where in the Fort Worth area are the crappie hitting now? I understand weather has been a little cold lately, but where are some good spots in this area? I live close to the Eagle Mountain Lake and Benbrook Lake. Help PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Benbrook has 2 barges...different owners. One owner can be a little challenging to deal with at times...but the fishing can be decent there starting now through spring time. Just pay your money and try to overlook the owner/mgmt. The people that fish there are nice. I wont mention which barge has the challenging owner/mgr...i will let them identify themselves....they may have changed for the better since the last time i fished there. My opinion....
Another place is Lake Weatherford barge. If u have a boat....Lake Ray Roberts along with the two lakes mentioned as well.

Welcome Sergeant Major!

Fort worth has a few decent areas to fish, Benbrook can be challenging but rewarding as there are many large crappie to be caught, Eagle Mountain is also a decent lake.
I hear weatherford is hit or miss at the crappie house.

best of luck and let us know how you fare!

I have had some excellent stringers of crappie from Weatherford. Just fish at night when it is cold.

Welcome SGM!!! ...and thank you for your service!

I've been fishing the creek between Eagle Mountain and Lake Worth and doing fairly well from my little 2-man boat. I was out this past Saturday and the water wasn't flowing and still managed to catch 17 nice sized (.75lb - 1.5lb) crappie.

If you have small boat, you can put it in between the bridges on Ten-Mile Bridge Road.

Good luck!
K-F

PS - Caught most of them on Bobby Garland Baby Shad(Blue Ice) on a 1/16th oz head about 1.5'-2.0' below a bobber.

According to a report just recently release it is safe to eat crappie and bass and sandies from the Lake Worth area just don't eat the bottom feeders!
Another excellant crappie lake that hasn't been mentioned is Lake Bridgeport. It's about the same distance from Fort Worth as Ray Roberts. I fish both of them but usually do better at RR.
Welcome to the area and enjoy the many lakes around us!

MOE BANDY, K-F, burton1795, and Minnow Dauber.

I appreciate the friendly welcome and the advice on fishing in the Fort Worth area.

K-F, Minnow Dauber wrote an interesting comment about whether or not the fish in Lake Worth are good for consumption.

I read that also and I was avoiding Lake Worth altogether.

You guys are my new fishing buddies and I look forward to sharing fishing news and advice. Thanks

I usually fish at the Barge at night when it is cold. Usually there is no one else there and it is really nice. And I usually catch 3 to 1 on jigs over minnows.
