Brazos river crappie

Brazos river crappie - 02/23/20 09:12 PM

I hit the Brazos river for the first time Saturday. A TFF member was with me. The crappie and sand bass fishing has been good. Well, It was good up until the day I went. But ,no one else were catching any either. 8 hours of scanning and jigging produced 4 lost jigs and 1 drum. I didn't see anyone catch any crappie.
But , I got to play with my new Garmin and the scenery was purdy. And my fishing buddy kept me look laughing with his rattle trap mishaps.

And we saw a family of wild pigs swim across the river

we put in here at Hamm Creek Park

https://www.texasoutside.com/campgrounds/hamm-creek-park-in-rio-vista

From the ramp we tried Painted Rock and then went back the other way to some bluffs and then we went to the bridge with all the sunken timber. well, there was timber everywhere
No one caught fish. I didn't see any crappie at all. I caught the one drum.

Re: Brazos river crappie - 02/25/20 04:03 PM

people said they have been on the bottom but just wont bite in that area. I don't fish that area, but i was there on Sunday and i was asking boaters as they loaded back on the trailer. I was bank fishing the Nolan river where everyone goes and we have been catching whites and crappie. I would only catch the whites with all chrome rooster tail and a slow retrieve. Whites are the easiest to catch but the crappie are not biting aggressively.
While i was there a guy said he caught 20 crappie back a week ago but he was there for hours until finally he started catching. When i was there on Sunday he caught 4. I would try Nolan and watch you electronics if you have them. I know some good spots on PK if you ever go.

Yep, a week ago they were catching them in the area I was at. I have electronics with SI and DI.. When you say PK, or you referring to a river part of it or the main lake. I don't think my bass tracker is big enough to handle the PK main lake

I love the Brazos, I always see deer, pigs or turkeys. The Crappie fishing is hot when they’re on but terrible when they aren’t biting. I’ve been to Painted Rock at times with 15-20 boats and EVERYONE limit out and I’ve been there with 15-20 boats and EVERYONE gets skunked.

I fish there extensively. There are brush piles everywhere and I can say there's not much on brush piles right now. Crappie are roaming around... I dont know what they'll do, but it'll be interesting to see if where they spawn.

Do you have graphs and know how to read them because there is absolutely no shortage of crappie in that area and I consistently pull em out. Have a coffee and relax. You’re gonna get a hemorrhoid.

I went out there about a month ago and caught 1 tiny crappie and a couple drums. Did not mark any crappie. It's a beautiful area for sure.

Fishing Whitney this year has just been weird to say the least . After the last flood it has gone down hill fast . We have our lake house there and been fishing Whitney for well over 12 years . It has nothing to do with guides and the internet . We live near Juniper Cove and yes the crappie are doing just fine in our neighbors slip . We have a slip at Harbor Master and NOTHING all year ! It has always produced for us really good as we always bait our slip out with bamboo every year . For some reason all the crappie have been on the north end of the lake this year . And the lake has not gotten cold enough for the winter bite . I have a fiend who fishes the Brazos by the bridge and 2 weeks ago the crappie were hot . He brought them by the house and showed them to me . Just chill , they will come back this spring !

Also can confirm. I was used to catching 25 of these most every trip sans a day after a cold front in the upper part. Went yesterday .... had 10 keepers but released all. They're just roaming around. Be patient, it'll be fine soon.

Re: Brazos river crappie - 02/29/20 11:31 AM

Talked to my neighbor yesterday afternoon and he had just got home from his slip at Juniper Cove . He had 16 keepers . All over 12 inches . He said they were all over the place from deep to shallow . He also told me they are not biting till after 11:00 and bite till around 3:00 . Weird the want do anything early . My good friend who was in the picture also has a slip by us at Harbor Master said the same thing . Going down today to the slip around 10:00 and will see . My neighbor only uses jigs , me I only use minnows , as I have a home made minnow vat at the lake house .

Re: Brazos river crappie - 02/29/20 11:56 AM

It works great and just simple . A double pump from Walmarts around 20 bucks and I use a water additive called Better-Bait .It is for minnows and shad . Kind of nice not to have to throw away minnows when you leave , or have them when you go early and not have to wait for the store to open . [Linked Image]

It isn't bad in the OC. My wife grew up here and we got her parents house. I had more crime in Seagoville.

We had had a great day on the river. Kept 37 larger crappie. All the fish kept on my boat were 12+. We through back well over 100. I found a new pattern late in the day that almost eliminated small fish. We started catching big fish constantly. I love the river!
