Looking for trolling motor with spot lock

I just got a new to me 18ft cobra bass boat that I am rigging out for crappie fishing. Looking for a good used trolling motor with spot lock. Not picky on brand, would prefer at least 24v. Looking for used cause I’m trying to do it on a budget, but very willing to pay a fair price. Thanks!

Spot lock or anchor lock? I made that mistake once...ended up with a trolling motor that would follow contour lines but would not anchor on a spot unless I purchased an additional $500 electrical component...just saying, make sure you are getting what you want...the first time (it’s cheaper this way). Feel free to PM me, if you specific details...look in the trading post section, that’s where you generally find them.

For my money, it’s a minn Kota, Terranova, 24 volt 80 lb thrust, with Ipilot...it has a remote (I love remote control), electric footpad (I hate foot controls)...the Ipilot has the anchor lock feature you are wanting and several other bells and whistles that you will thoroughly enjoy once you use them. The Ipilot link offers additional versatility, if you are going full out on your electrical components, but I have no need, for that capability at this juncture...if you find one used that has it get it, as it is a slight up grade over the Ipilot dollar wise, and allows you to expand on down the road.

That would be "co-Pilot" or "i-Pilot"

co-Pilot does not have spot lock as where i-Pilot does have the spot lock.

I searched for months and ended up buying a refurbished Motorguide Xi5 from Hodgesmarine.com. Has a 1 year warranty which I am happy with. Buying used has no warranty at all so it gave me piece of mind and cost the same as most used ones I found online. Have used it 6 times and works perfectly and looked brand new out of shipping container. Had never been in the water as far as I could tell. Good luck with your search!

Xi5 was on fhe old boat. I liked it for brushpiles and dock but I missed cable steer for bridges and timber. Electric steer is too slow IMO for that. Ultrex will be on the new boat. It solves my dilemma of needing 2 trolling motors on the boat!!

If you’re looking for used, then you’ll probably wind up going with an Xi5. I would assume that even a used Ultrex would still be about the same price as a new Xi5. I have zero regrets about my Xi5. I fish stump infested Naconiche with it. I’d say it turns as fast as I could turn my old cable steer minn kota edge. You will not use the foot control that comes with the Xi5 though. I used mine about 3 times. Spring is too stiff in it and batteries go dead too fast. They should’ve made an outlet with a retractable wire that could plug into the unit from the foot control. The remote is way more user friendly and you don’t have to have your foot hiked up anymore or cut a hole in the deck for a trolling motor tray. Batteries lasted a year on my remote, and it saves the memory even if the battery dies.

After having a Terrova that was slow but adequate I went with the Xi5 because I have Lowrance. Wow, now I complain it is too fast. I'm having a different experience than Todd. The foot pedal is in the boat stored and never used. The batteries for it haven't even been inserted for the wireless control of it. I have no problem with it in timber. I haven't shot docks yet but I expect the Xi5 to perform well for shooting docks.

GPS signals under bridges can be lost at times; many variables, # of satellites available, width/length of bridge, cloudy/sunny, etc. to make the Xi5 used as a cable. Maybe Todd is speaking about the foot pedal, not the remote. From the crappie he, Clay and little one catch, all they need is a paddle anyway.

I bought the Xi5 for my pontoon boat and it has been a game changer for me. There is nothing like locking on to a spot and just fishing and not have to control anything. Need to go to the back of the boat and put a fish in the livewell or take care of things no problem come back and I am in the same spot. Its one of the best purchases I have made for the boat. I have the 80lb and it holds the pontoon pretty well.

I've had both the Xi5 and the Ultrex. the Xi5 was good but not an Ultrex. Yep! I love my Ultrex with I-Pilot Link. Power steering on foot control is awesome! Spot Lock dead on accurate, Go to waypoint is the bees knees. Unlike Jimmy I have Humminbird. All 3 units linked with Ultrex. You can run it from the remote, my smart phone foot pedal or any of the 3 units. You update it with your phone, Flat out awesomness!

I would love an ultrex, but unfortunately I don’t think it will fit in the budget. Especially since it would cost about three times what I paid for the boat haha.

I understand cdoz35. If you can save for one it would be a great tool for ya though.

I've had both the Xi5 and Ultrex, and hands down...the Ultrex is MUCH better for all the reasons noted above in this post.

I have an Xi5 on my pontoon and have fished with Ultrex on other boats. Both are good but I prefer the Xi5. My foot control is in the storage box and never gets needed.

I love my Xi5 and would strongly recommend it to anyone! I would also recommend the LiftSaver to mount the Xi5 (or the MK Terrova, Ulterra, Riptide) which addresses all the issues with mounting these electric steer trolling motors.

Ok so thanks for all the advice guys. I actually found a terrova with ipilot. It is the newer version with the better spot lock system. I got a great deal on it less than 10 months old looks brand new. Able to save about 50% or so off a new one. I am so excited about having this. I think it will really be a game changer.
