Ulna Nerve Issues... - 07/24/17 11:12 PM

Anyone have issues with there's? I made a cast bout 1.5 months ago now and having lots of trouble. Just left from my 2nd appoiment with the Orthopedic. First time I got a shot and brace. Now I've been losing some feeling in my hand and my arm constantly feels like dead weight. Wrist constantly hurts and muscles stay burning around my elbow. I'm having a nerve test done next week to check for damage but he has a good idea it is messed up some due to my symptoms I'm having. Saying a minimal 8 week recovery if it needs surgery.

Well, ive had issues related to a herniated disc that sound extremely similar. I have the pain under control but still have numbness and weakness in my left arm if i tilt my head back. My orthopedist didnt do much but pain killers, went to a pain doctor and got the epidural steroid injection which helped but blasted my blood sugar out of the water (type 2 diabetic). So no second injection as scheduled. He put me on gabapentin and that has been a Godsend

My friend told me actually stay away from that drug. Said he had horrible side effects from it. Mines all related to a bad cast I made fishing. Go me. Ha

I know exactly how you feel. I have no feeling in the thumb and first two fingers on my left hand. I thought the diabetic neuropathy was starting to affect my hands
But the bone doctor explained that my shoulder was just plain worn out a affecting the the ulnar and the humerous bones. In my case they can't operate because of the congestive heart failure, Afib, and all the rest are I'm being treated for. Have had these doctors say theory can't help me and do the best I can with the pain ki!let's.

Maybe this is what I have and not tennis elbow?...?

I've not gone to a doc. I'm trying to tough this out.

But your symptoms sound very familiar.

Only I never make a bad cast.

I guess if it's not better by Oct 1st I'm going to go to doc.

I know a lot about female anatomy Dave. I think the ulna is just north of the calliope tubes there.

Damn. Mines not that bad. I don't hurt bad enough to quit fishing.

I'll live with it I reckon and pretty sure it will go away. I haven't fished in 9 days and mind feels so much better.

I think mine came from several heated rounds of HR dirby with wiffle bat and blitz balls.

Hmmmmmm, kinda sounds like an ulnar collateral ligament injury. If it's severe, not saying you have it, it can lead to Tommy John surgery.

I understand some people have issues with it, similar to a lot of drugs they can all have weird side affects. For me its been nothing but relief. Killed the pain and eased the numbness, and i sleep like a frickin rock. Going to doc today and will see if i have to stay on it. Im prolly not going to

Re: Ulna Nerve Issues... - 07/25/17 01:13 PM

I severed my ulna nerve when I broke my arm when I was 12 years old. I started to lose control of my hand, it was stuck in a fist (like Bob Dole) when the doctor found that I severed it. I had a nerve graft from my leg. Attended lots of occupational therapy to relearn how to use my hand. It still feels a little weird at age 25, but I have full use of my hand, so I deal with it...

Re: Ulna Nerve Issues... - 07/25/17 01:23 PM

My Doc told me one time, "it's just the price I have to pay for getting old."
I then ask him if being a doctor was his only career choice?

Also, I know a fantastic arm and hand specialist in Houston if you want a second opinion and don't mind the drive. If it weren't for this Dr. I would be an amputee from the elbow down on my left arm.

Re: Ulna Nerve Issues... - 07/25/17 01:41 PM

Several years ago while at work, I noticed the little finger on my left hand had gone to sleep but I didn't think much about it. The next day, half of my left hand was numb. To make a long story short, I had unknowingly damaged the ulna nerve. I had surgery to relocate the nerve but it was too late and I still have numbness in half of my left hand. The muscles in my hand have atrophied and I've lost a good bit of use. Luckily my hand did not draw up into a claw which happens often. I still fish a lot with it but I can't throw crank baits much as my hand will lock up and I might throw the whole rod in the lake. If you're having nerve problems get it checked out pronto! Oh yeah, I'm left handed.

If your ortho can't locate the problem, you may consider seeing a neurologist. It could be a nerve issue originating in your back or neck that is causing the problem in your arm.
