Cold air coming out of my outlets!

Cold air coming out of my outlets! - 02/05/14 06:30 PM

I have never noticed it before now. I have cold air blowing through most of my light switches and outlets. Any outside wall has the issue. I never touched it before. I am guessing foam spray is an option.

Spray foam will work BUT I suggest to pull the plate off and try to put some insulation next to the boxes and push it down into the walls. At some places they even sell the pre-cut wool ones to install under each plate.

PLEASE be carefull wouldn't want to hear about your electrocution.

I took the front plate off. The junction box is one of those cheap plastic boxes with the little notched knockouts. Removing the box itself is not an option. It is nailed to the stud and I would tear up the Sheetrock to get it out and play with the insulation. I think they make thin foam sheets per-cut for this. Maybe I will try that and a little foam.

You could just mash some cotton balls in there

sometimes where the studs go into the ceiling and into the attic they dont always matchup and the air thats blowing is coming infrom the attic and down into the wall plugs.
this could be a bad thing
dont stuff cotton balls in the holes they can catch a bit of static electricity or even spark from the switch while its making contact and spark up the cotton balls
also if dust or lint is getting into the plugs this to can create a fire

Tin foil, works for windows in the summer, no reason it won't work for this.

Mudshark, turn off power before using the sprayfoam. It comes from the can in a semi-liquid state and will conduct electricity! Once it dries to touch, then you are good to go.

You will need to trim the edges, and those are more to prevent water from getting in than air from coming out. The air is either coming from the header in the attick, or from the expansion groves in the brick. Either way, you could stop the air at the point of entry and fix your problem. You may have too much return in your AC, if the supply is restricted, it will make the area negitive. This will cause your house to bring in air any where it can get it. If you fix it at the switch, where will it draw from next?

Isn't that spray foam flammable when it first comes out of the can?

You know a fairly small amount of that stuff can break sheet rock off a wall?

They sell foam pre-cut to fit electrical switches and sockets. I bought some probably over ten years ago and put them in our switches and boxes for the same reason. I could feel a cold breeze coming from the outlets. I saw them in an ad for Lowe's or Home Depot this past fall I think.

Most of the air in our home comes from the vent in the attic. You really do not want to close that off because one of its purposes is to prevent the build up of methane gas in the attic.

Sounds like that ain't the only place you are leaking energy.......i have a thermal imager and do whole house inspections......i can see things that can't be seen with the naked eye
